More than 100,000 people have died from coronavirus in the UK since the disease first appeared in the country almost a year ago, in what public health experts have said is a sign of “phenomenal failure of policy and practice”.

Government figures on Wednesday showed a record daily reported 1,564 new fatalities, bringing the total to 101,160.

Almost one in 660 people in the UK have died from Covid or Covid-related causes so far during the pandemic. The UK now has one of the worst Covid mortality rates in the world, at 151 per 100,000 people, ahead of the US, Spain and Mexico where there are 116, 113 and 108 deaths per 100,000 people respectively.

New mutant Covid strain from Brazil is ‘concerning’, Boris says


And now there is a new Brazilian strain. Not much info on it yet, but this thing has always been two steps ahead of the powers that be.

The prime minister has said a new mutant strain of coronavirus originating in Brazil is ‘concerning’. Former Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt quizzed him at a session of the Liaison Committee, saying that yesterday NERVTAG talked about a new strain of the virus which has already escaped to Japan. Mr Johnson responded: ‘We are concerned about the new Brazilian variant.’ He continued: ‘We already have tough measures as you know to protect this country from new infections coming from abroad. ‘We’re taking steps to do that in respect of the Brazilian variant. He said there remained many questions about the variant, including whether it would be resistant to the vaccines.

The photo on the left are healthy lungs. You can see all the colorful blood vessels. The center pic is someone that had covid and recovered, you can see less blood vessels than pre-covid. We don’t know if they will come back. The right are lungs of someone who passed away from covid.



The left is a picture of a normal, healthy, heart. The right is picture is what happens to the blood vessels from COVID. In simple terms, the splintering of the blood vessels in the right picture is what makes oxygenation so difficult.

Ice cream tests positive for coronavirus in China

Coronavirus has been detected on samples of ice cream in north China, prompting authorities to seize thousands of potentially contaminated products.

People thought to have come into contact with the batches, produced by Tianjin Daqiaodao Food Company, are now being traced by authorities in the the northern Tianjin municipality.

All of Tianjin Daqiaodao’s products have also been sealed and contained after the company sent three samples to the municipal centre for disease control this week – and all tested positive for Covid.

Epidemiological investigations conducted so far indicate the company produced the batch of ice cream using raw materials, including milk powder imported from New Zealand and whey powder imported from Ukraine.

Tianjin Daqiaodao also confirmed that as of 2pm on Thursday, its 1,662 employees were placed in quarantine and put through nucleic acid testing. Of them, 700 have already tested negative for Covid while results for the remaining 962 employees remain to be confirmed.

Dr Stephen Griffin, a virologist based at the University of Leeds, said the incident should not generate “panic” and that it was “probably a one-off” which “has likely come from a person”.

Tokyo reports 1,240 new coronavirus cases; nationwide tally 5,295

The Tokyo metropolitan government on Tuesday reported 1,240 new cases of the coronavirus, up 36 from Monday. The tally brought Tokyo's cumulative total to 87,914.

The number (662 men and 578 women) is the result of 6,994 tests conducted on Jan 16.

By age group, the most number of cases were people in their 20s (282), followed by 211 in their 30s, 192 in their 40s, 186 in their 50s, 104 in their 60s, 92 in their 70s and 69 in their 80s. Also, 88 cases were younger than 20 (28 of whom were younger than 10), health officials said.

Death toll from COVID-19 in Philippines exceeds 10,000

MANILA, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Department of Health (DOH) of the Philippines on Wednesday reported 64 new COVID-19 deaths, pushing the total death toll to 10,042.

The fatality rate in the Southeast Asian country now is at 1.98 percent, the DOH said in a daily bulletin.

The DOH also reported 1,862 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, bringing the total to 505,939.

Brazil’s collapsing health service, new COVID variant, raise Indigenous risk

[BRAZIL] The city of Manaus made world headlines last April when a first wave of the coronavirus swept through the city. Now that city, and the entire state of Amazonas, is being swept by a second wave of the pandemic, which is shaping up to be far worse than the first.
Indigenous people are especially vulnerable, with their mortality rate from COVID-19 at least 16% higher than the Brazilian average. Now, São Gabriel da Cachoeira, located 852 kilometers (529 miles) from Manaus, near the Colombia-Venezuela frontier, is being heavily impacted.
São Gabriel has a large Indigenous population, and while it escaped the worst of the first wave of the pandemic, its meagre health system resources are now being overwhelmed. The state of Amazonas lacks sufficient hospital beds, its ICUs are overrun, and medical facilities lack sufficient oxygen.
Of extreme concern is a new Brazilian coronavirus variant called P.1, which recently appeared in Amazonas state. While more research is needed, one possibility is that P.I. is bypassing the human immune response triggered by the initial coronavirus lineage that ravaged Manaus last year. This means people could be reinfected.

“Health professionals are physically and psychologically exhausted, and patients from Manaus and the interior of Amazonas state are queuing for beds. In a word, we are going through a crisis of unprecedented dimensions. Perhaps we are witnessing one of the most painful situations in the history of this pandemic.”

These dire words were reported by phone on 14 January to Mongabay by researcher Jesem Orellana, from the Amazonia branch of the Brazilian Health Ministry’s Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ), one of Latin America’s leading health institutions.

Bluntly put, the nation’s health care system is collapsing in Manaus, as it, and the rest of Amazonas state, are swept by a second horrific wave of the pandemic— maybe exacerbated by a new COVID-19 variant recently detected in the South American nation.
