Korea halts flights from UK over new COVID-19 variant

South Korea will suspend all passenger flights from the United Kingdom over worries about a new variant of the coronavirus, health officials said Wednesday.

Yoon Tae-ho, a senior official at the Ministry of Health and Welfare, told a virtual news briefing that air travel from the UK will be barred from Wednesday until Dec. 31.

Korea’s two domestic airlines together operate direct routes to and from London‘s Heathrow Airport four times a week. Korean Air will still fly planes from Incheon to London, while Asiana Airlines will halt all flights between the cities. In total, five inbound flights and one outbound flight will be canceled over the period.

“These are precautionary measures decided in a meeting with other ministries Tuesday afternoon to prevent the mutant virus found in the UK from reaching Korea,” Yoon said.

In addition to the short-term suspension of air travel, starting Jan. 1 those arriving from the UK will be subject to PCR testing at the end of the mandatory 14-day isolation period. Passengers with temperatures of at least 37.3 degrees Celsius, as opposed to the standard 37.5 degrees Celsius, will be classified as symptomatic, he said, to be tested immediately at the airport. Flight crew members will get PCR tests regardless of symptoms.

Not all travel links have been suspended. Freight routes are not affected by the new restrictions. It is also still possible for people to come here from the UK after stopping by other countries, Yoon explained.

There is now yet another mutation of the virus which has mutated independently of the latest mutation found in the UK. This one has been found in South Africa and is apparently even more transmissible than the UK version which was already up to 70% more transmissible than the original.

At least countries are doing the responsible thing and telling the rest of the world when they've found a new variant, despite the rest of the world closing their doors to them.

Personally I have a very bad feeling about all of this. Covid seems to bear all the hallmarks of viruses like the flu, where it always seems to be one step ahead and because of this, is impossible to vaccinate against.

Something tells me that this year isn't going to be quite the 'wait for the jab, let's all get back to normal' year everyone is expecting, but I desperately hope I'm wrong.

Philippines Bans Flights from Britain over Fears of New Virus Variant
24/12/20 01:11

MANILA, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Philippines has imposed a ban on flights from Britain over fears of the transmission of a newly-detected coronavirus variant that is more infectious, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said on Wednesday.

The Philippines is the first Southeast Asian country to suspend air travel from Britain amid concerns about the spread of the fast-spreading strain detected there.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte approved on Tuesday night the temporary suspension of all flights from Britain starting Dec. 24 until Dec. 31, Roque said in a statement.

All passengers who have been in Britain within 14 days immediately preceding arrival to the Philippines, including those merely in transit, are also temporarily restricted from entering the country for the same period, Roque said.

On the other hand, Roque said passengers already in transit from Britain and all those who have been to Britain within 14 days immediately preceding arrival to the Philippines, who arrive before 12:01 a.m. of Dec. 24, shall not be subject to entry restriction but they would be required to undergo stricter quarantine and testing protocols.

Yeah, but, if they have flights going to the UK, but not allowing flights from the UK, surely they will eventually run out of aircraft as they'll all be stuck in the UK.

The might be able to reposition to another European city, such as Amsterdam or Paris and use the aircraft for that run back to Seoul. I suppose it all depends on the loads/demand but I can't see many people flying from Seoul to London unless the absolutely have to, but there will be plenty of people trying to get out of the UK as it goes into yet another near total lockdown from December 26th.

On this basis, the only demand will be in the wrong direction, so any way back to the UK from Phnom Penh will be gone within the next few days.

Sarcasm aside, it’s not out of the question to be carrying some types of freight on passenger aircraft, which avoids it being a completely empty sector. I’d be inclined to expect a route from Asia to do a tech/intermediate stop in the UK, with tightly controlled quarantine protocol, and then to continue on to another European destination. Paris/Amsterdam/Brussels, etc. Then from Europe, directly back to Asia. The Emirates flight into Cambodia prior to March 2020 did the same thing going Dubai-Rangoon-, and latterly Dubai-Bangkok(intermediate)-Phnom Penh. Just as doc described! Doh.

My outfit had to do something similar due to the Danish outbreak, recently, to avoid crews and aircraft being stranded in Denmark.

It depends on what the loads are like ($$), and whether they can be made to work, and when and how they can implement ground handling. Just expect a very different, less frequent schedule if there’s sufficient traffic.

It still sucks.

Now, the foreign office may well be out of date, but these days they seem to be referring to the same century, which is...good. Ish. It may/will suck big time, trying to leave from the UK for the next few months. But as I normally end up in Europe for several weeks at a time, I’m hoping that the impact can be limited while the world works out that it’s probably affecting everyone.
These days, every new event requires a few weeks to unravel the web of misconceptions, and sort the pertinent from the panic.
