Cambodia-based sports charity Indochina Starfish Foundation has won a Peace and Sport Award for its football coaching programme across the country.
Peace and Sport’s award for Sport for Development and Peace Programme of the Year was announced by the Monaco-based organisation on Tuesday in recognition for ISF’s Football for Change Outreach Project, which is sponsored by Uefa Foundation for Children.
ISF’s programme saw 200 coaches in rural Cambodia trained to use ISF’s Social Impact Curriculum, which “uses engaging football-based activities to raise awareness about key social issues and minority rights, while teaching essential life skills”.
The NGO then selected 20 of those coaches to go on and run 480 sessions to 500 children across deprived areas of rural Cambodia, with children having to commit to attending school to attend the course.
“So far 99 per cent of the 500 participants have pledged to pursue further education,” ISF said in a statement.
