Remains of a Child Found on Riverside, Phnom Penh

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Cambodia News (Phnom Penh): Part of a human body has been found by a drain at the riverside in Phnom Penh. The source said the Cham fishermen were fishing in that area when they found half of a decomposed body.
The body had clearly been in the water for some time, because it had deteriorated to such an extent that the police were unable to identify it as male or female, but it is the body of a child aged about 10 years old.

The police took the body out of the river for examination, then the body was taken to Changkran Taprum Steung Meanchey pagoda.
RIP.

Is this regards the body parts washed up earlier?

And if so, it has been updated to say the body was cremated, which begs the question how was half a body washed up??

CEO News says:
We cannot answer for something that was written elsewhere, but would imagine that what they meant to say was that the "remains" were cremated. The body was so decomposed that there was only half of it left when it came ashore. What was left of the body was taken to the pagoda to be cremated and receive funeral rites.
Hope that answers your question.

So sad that nobody seems to have reported a missing child. And it's chilling that someone might have just chucked the body in the river, but if so, we will never know what happened.
Anyway, he or she is out of their misery now. RIP little kid who died alone.

Maybe they have and they'll figure it out. It could also be a street urchin type kid who nobody was caring for.

Reminds me of a story from the UK several years ago of a young boys body that was found floating in the Thames. From the post-mortem, they somehow managed to discover that he had only been in the UK for several days, was from a specific town in South West Nigeria, and had been killed as part of a voodoo ceremony. There was no trace of who he was however, but the Met police were determined to find out, and travelled to his birthplace in Nigeria several times to try to solve the mystery.

It was one of those stories that kept surfacing and disappearing again, but it was remarkable the lengths the police went to to try to discover who he was, and simply wouldn't allow the case to go cold, touring local schools in Nigeria to ask if they knew of any young boys who had gone missing and even involving the then President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela who made a public appeal for more information which was broadcast all over Africa.

Unfortunately, despite many leads, the case remains open. But the amount of effort that went into solving the crime was pretty astonishing, and it's a real shame they never got to the bottom of it.

If only the Khmer police had the resources to do the same. Or at least ask for help from international forces who have dealt with similar cases.

The thought of the remains of a child's body being washed up and simply cremated, with little to effort to discover how something so horrific came about is too depressing to contemplate.

RIP little one.

Those are British police. Western ideals about a little boy who dies alone. And a determination to find the killer or at least who and why.

These are Khmer police. Khmer ideals about death. Just is. Fate. Karma.

Whatever happened to the investigation into the Frenchman whom died in the car in the pond with the kids in the trunk? Initially Khmer police said suicide, then the French said murder. Rumors of a land and entanglement with a local okhna or Bong Tom. But never heard a final report (or arrest).

RIP little guy. May you have a happier life.
