Officer in RCAF Car Crashes While Overtaking
Cambodia News(Banteay Meanchey): A 58-year-old man, Chum Setha, a deputy commander and chief of the 51st infantry brigade, drove a car and crashed into an electric pole, at 5:30 pm, on December 10, 2020, on national road 5, in Soriya village, Ouchrao district, Banteay Meanchey.
The police said the officer was driving a car, plate RCAF072-3405, on national road 5 from west to east at high speed, and while he was overtaking a truck driven in the same direction, the car crashed into a concrete electric pole, causing the driver to get seriously injured. The car was damaged at the front, and the pole was seriously smashed up.

Concrete power poles are closely related to road dividers. So there you go, even if you don't see a road divider around there's always the power pole cousins to contend with. He must have been doing a tremendous rate of knots to wreck the pole as well as the car that well.
And on another note, this has to be one of the few accident photos where it looks like the airbags in the dash have worked. Usually you will see the photos of the vehicle and no deployed airbags and in this case he's bloody lucky they did go off as while the report says he was seriously injured it may have been worse.

Why would he run? He’s a high ranking military officer, driving an RCAF SUV.Whatsupdoc wrote:He didn't run of ? That's unuasual.
It’s obviously the concrete pole’s fault. It should be apologizing to him for being in the way.

I hope the officer recovers well, and he can keep talking about his account of the accident, more people may listen and not make the same mistake.
But obstacles should be avoided when you're driving, imagine if he was on a Moto, or even if the concrete post was that of another person on a Moto. I wonder with the new and updated roads if conciderations have been taken to put such danger's away from the roads. There are a row near where I live, all neat and tidy, apart from one which is out of place being half a meter into the road.

Always "hope" but never "expect".

Re: Officer in RCAF Car Crashes While Overtaking
I’m always amazed at the attitude in the Kingdom of Cambodia. Accidents just happen. Same attitude as western countries had over a hundred years ago. Before there was a push to find out why accidents happen. And to change things so they don’t happen.
It’s possible that this accident was unavoidable. But maybe if there were more lanes and the passing lanes were bigger and concrete poles were set much further back from road (or as one member alluded to, concrete poles in the road), this story may have never happened.

Compared to here, the roads in Western countries are well designed from a safety point of view and drivers have to pass a stringent test. Deaths and injuries per mile driven have fallen a lot. Yet crashes still happen and mostly due to really stupid driver behaviour, imho.newkidontheblock wrote: ↑Sat Dec 12, 2020 10:46 am I’m always amazed at the attitude in the Kingdom of Cambodia. Hence the big push to have computer driven cars.armchairlawyer wrote:Compared to here, the roads in Western countries are well designed from a safety point of view and drivers have to pass a stringent test. Taking the human driver out of the accident equation.
It’s already begun. As safety features. Built in radar sensing, departure warnings, auto braking, even forcing a car back into a lane. Some cars even automatically parallel park.
And of course, self-driving cars.
