Three people have been injured in a bus crash while travelling from Battambang to Phnom Penh on a Capitol Tours bus, a company the government last year threatened with possible closure.

Yesterday morning the bus carrying an unknown number of people crashed in Kampong Chhnang’s Boribo district after it grazed a motorbike on the road, said Ros Bunnarith, Boribo’s deputy chief of traffic police.

“We are filing a report to the provincial police headquarters,” Bunnarith said.

“We will wait for a resolution between the company and victims.”

After the slight collision with the motorbike, the bus flipped over on its side into a small canal off the road, Bunnarith said.

Sharne Wolff, the mother of a 19-year-old Australian woman on the bus yesterday, told a Post reporter via Twitter that water began to seep into the vehicle as people were briefly trapped inside.

“It landed in water and water started coming into the bus,” Wolff said yesterday. “They couldn’t get out until someone managed to smash the front window.”

The 63-year-old driver of the motorbike that made contact with the bus remained hospitalised at Kampong Chhnang’s provincial hospital with unknown injuries last night, according to Bunnarith.

A 24-year-old woman who was also on the bus left the hospital after receiving three stitches to her head.

Police were unaware last night whether a 72-year-old man who broke his left elbow remained at the provincial hospital or went to Phnom Penh.
