That translates into influence.
Pre WWII it was more of a mixture of a few primary languages, Spanish French English. Even German was the leading language in a lot of technology related academic topics. This is obviously a western perspective. Several major players in Asia did fine without them.
After the 2nd WW The US dominance made their language the lingua Franca. UK just happened to speak a very similar language.

The English language, recognised throughout the world, how would many of country got by without, let's face it countries such has India had difficulties talking to each other at one time, and yes, there are countries that American English is preferred, due to them having dreams of being Hollywood stars.

It's controversial because it's doing very well now.
