Ex-Military Officer Arrested for Drug Trafficking in Ratankkiri

Cambodia News (Ratanakiri): A former military officer was arrested after being involved in drug trafficking. After raiding his house on November 30, 2020, the police also found a supply of illegal wood. The arrest took place in Ouromeat village, Sangkat Labaseak, Banlung city, Ratanakiri. The suspect was identified as Vong Ra, 40 years old.

Previously, on November 28, 2020, the police cracked down on drug trafficking at Heng Leang Chas school and found a big packet of drugs in a Zoomer motorbike. A man named Vang Chansovan was arrested and sent to the police station for questioning. The suspect confessed that a group of people was involved in those drugs, and named the officer as an accomplice.

On November 30, 2020, the police collaborated with the judge to surround the house of a suspect named Vong Ra for questioning. The house was locked, so the police decided to broke the lock and entered the house to investigate. The police found a pile of illegal logs, two packs of drugs, drug equipment, a knife, and some nun-chucks. The suspect has been arrested.

Prohibition leads to corruption. An unregulated drug market allowsour youth access to these " illegal " substances and that is what government can & must control. Drug policies should be grounded in science, compassion health & human rights.
Prohibition does not work and a real solution must be found urgently.
