Village Mob Suspected of Killing Suspected Banana Thief
Cambodia News (Kandal): A 32-year-old man, Yeb Sokkey, a fisherman, who was suspected of stealing bananas, was attacked by a mob of villagers in Kampong Pring village, Sangkat Seth Thbong, Kandal. He was then found dead on a pathway by a pond on November 18, 2020, at 2:40 pm.
According to the local people, the man allegedly stole some bananas from a villager. Then the villager, together with about 30 to 40 other people, picked up rocks and sticks and chased after the suspected thief. The man ran away and swam across the river to escape, but when the police went to the scene, they found that he was already lying dead near a pond. The local officers reported this to the specialist police and the autopsist who came to examine the body.
The post mortem examination revealed that the victim suffered from many wounds, mostly to the head, including a 10cm deep cut to the skull, and the authorities concluded that the deceased bled to death from his injuries.

Police say they are looking for the killers...
https://www.khmertimeskh.com/50784583/m ... f-bananas/Maj Bunly said Sokkrey’s body was handed over to his family for a funeral.
“Police are not sure if the dead man was a thief or stole the bananas from the villager’s farm. Even if he was a thief, he should not have been killed,” he said.
“Now our police are investigating the case. We are looking for those [villagers] who had fatally beaten up the victim and will bring them to be punished by the laws,” he said. “The country has laws and we will not allow people to kill someone contrary to the law,” he said.

Re: Village Mob Suspected of Killing Suspected Banana Thief
UPDATE
The Cham community living on the riverbank and the local Khmer villagers have two different versions of how events played out leading to a man's violent death last Wednesday.
The family of the dead Cham man say he was hounded to death by the bloodthirsty mob, and they want justice; the villagers say that the man was a known thief, that he attacked people first with a knife, and the killing was in self-defense.
The deceased is alleged to have stolen two large bunches of bananas from a banana plantation in the village.

Yap Sokry leaped into a large pond with 20 to 40 villagers in pursuit, according to several accounts. Four of them found a rowboat and chased as he swam.
After about 30 minutes of shouting and chaos, Sokry’s head was smashed open. He bled onto a dirt path onto which he had been dragged.
The Cham fisherman was killed on Wednesday after being caught stealing bananas from a plantation in Kandal province — that much is consistent between the accounts of family, villagers and authorities, but many details are unclear.
Two days later, only hesitant second-hand tales pervade Kampong Pring village, in Takhmao city’s Setbo commune.
While the small local group of impoverished Cham fishers calls for justice, the court is examining the killing as a case of self-defense.
A village chief says police questioned four people over the incident. Lak Mengthy, director of the provincial police’s minor crimes bureau, says one of them was arrested.
Provincial court spokesperson Tin Socheatra said on Monday that the arrested suspect had been released. “[Deputy prosecutor] Sun Yeuth decided to allow the person to go home temporarily after his arrest because she will review his actions as legal self-defense,” Socheatra said.
