Does the government have a secret stash of jobs for them?

In the US, jobs such as in grocery stores, Amazon, making hand sanitizer have soared. At least from half a world away, I don’t see any growth industries in the Kingdom of Wonder.

Or is there something I missing?

Yeah, it's hard to notice from Hudson Valley City or wherever you reside but construction is still booming.

Yeah, it's hard to notice from Hudson Valley City or wherever you reside but construction is still booming.

And when all that construction is finished, ,,,,, Cambodia's KTV and Beer Garden Ladies will have somewhere to Go.

KTV and clubs to become restaurants

Prime Minister HE on Friday allowed entertainment clubs and karaoke outlets across the country to be converted into restaurants after the temporary shutdown since March to stem the spread of COVID-19.

Entertainment workers feel strain as government support scarce
August 8, 2020

The government’s announcement that KTVs and clubs may reopen as restaurants amid the Covid-19 outbreak is not helping employees of the entertainment industry, as a vast majority have remained unemployed since March with no government support, according to a union leader.

The Ministry of Tourism issued a directive in mid-March ordering entertainment venues to close for the foreseeable future to discourage large gatherings of people. Prime Minister HE then said in a speech on July 3 that KTV and nightclub operators would be allowed to reopen as restaurants to provide jobs for their former employees.

Ou Tepphallin, president of the Cambodian Food and Service Workers Federation (CFSWF), said that although some KTVs had begun to operate as restaurants, the measure had only benefited a very small number of workers.

‘Grey’ area keeps entertainment businesses and jobs alive

KTVs and nightclubs are still maintaining business during COVID-19 because of a loophole in the system. Through the use of a restaurant licence, KTVs and clubs are able to keep their businesses running, but experts believe that poor imposition of restrictions will leave people around the country in danger.

Phnom Penh City Hall announced in July that the owners of entertainment clubs and KTVs could apply to re-open their businesses by converting them into restaurants. However, there are reports the majority of entertainment clubs do not even have menus displayed, never mind a running kitchen.

An official notification by Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng earlier this year said that to boost economic activity and re-employment, the outlets can re-open by being converted into restaurants – but owners need to follow measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Authorities announced that they will carry out checks on businesses converting and reopening as restaurants to ensure that they adhere to their licences and COVID-19-prevention measures, but a Khmer Times investigation found a large majority of these businesses are neither serving food nor following safety measures.

A member of staff for a local nightclub, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “The club I work for has added restaurant to the end of its name and applied for a restaurant licence. This has allowed them to re-open without any questions. There are temperature checks on the way into the establishment but once inside there are hundreds of people tightly packed on the dance floor. I don’t believe it is safe.”

Others made similar statements.

Sex workers go online amid pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly increased the number of sex workers using online platforms to find work, as the restrictions implemented by the government on bars and nightclubs have affected the way they normally operate.

With advancements in technology and easy access to an internet connection, sex workers have found leverage to continue their work despite the global crisis. Most of them aim to attract foreign men in the country because they believe they can earn more from them compared to locals. However, very few foreigners have arrived in the country due to the pandemic.

Instead of waiting for the crisis to be over, these workers have utilised different dating and chatting apps in order to survive. Facebook, Instagram, Line, Telegram and Badoo are just some of the applications that are being used by sex workers to make their living.

Lala (fake name), a 24-year-old, has been providing sex services for one year now. According to her, she has to make a living to support her family. She has a sick grandmother who needs medical attention plus she is a single mother. Regular work, in a shop for example, only pays around $200 a month which is not enough to support the needs of her family. She has not completed her education so it is hard for her to get a high-paid job.

She said foreign customers are her priority. She markets herself by posting nude photos in chatting and dating apps. Her face is covered by her phone in her profile picture so only her body can be seen. Then, if the customer asks for pictures, she edits them with photo editing apps to make her skin even, whiter and prettier so customers will want her service. She starts with a price of $100 but sometimes the price is negotiated down to $70 or even $50.

Lala added that if she is lucky, she can earn almost $1,000 per month. However, she spends money on clothes, make-up and skin products to look her best in the market of sex workers.

She described the competition as a sex service girl as very high. “There are too many girls in one bar waiting for very few customers every night.”
