Carpets get ripped up, drywall gets ripped out, furniture and appliances that have been soaked are tossed out. The house get broken down to the timbers and then rebuilt due to mold concerns. Very expensive. Usually only after hurricanes.

What happens in Cambodia?

Phnom Penh (VNA) – Torrential rains left by storm Noul has caused severe flooding in a number of localities in Cambodia and forced local authorities to issue emergency state to limit travelling as water level in rivers continues to rise.

So far, the storm has left 11 dead, including eight people killed by a lightning strike and three others swept away by floodwater. Meanwhile, nearly 2,000 houses and about 312 hectares of rice and crop farm have been submerged. At the same time, 475 residents had to leave homes for a safer place.

According to Cambodia’s National Committee for Disaster Management, storm Noul's impact has caused flash flood in some parts of five provinces - Preah Sihanouk, Koh Kong, Oddar Meanchey, Pailin and Pursat.

Pailin has been the hardest-hit locality with 40 houses and 400m of canals affected. Governor Phan Chanthul said that heavy rains and flooding also affected 80 households in Sala Krao, while drowning the whole crop areas in the locality.

On September 21, a large bridge in Phnim Kravanh district of Pursat province collapsed, interrupting transportation activities through the bridge./.

PHNOM PENH/KANDAL ALERT
Image
Cambodia News, (Phnom Penh): Mr. Lim Kean Hor, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, led a technical team to inspect the water condition at Ang 7 January Dam and along the river delta that may face flooding at Stung Prek Tnaot on the western part of Phnom Penh and Kandal province in the afternoon of October 5, 2020.

The water level at the sluice gate at the dam at 5 pm was 7.4 meters high; that is 0.4 meters above the alert level of 7.00 meters. Now, the team has opened four water gates to release flood water from two waterways, the first waterway through Prek Kampus ( Ta Hor Canal) to Choeung Long Lake, and the Second Waterway via a deep drainage canal into the Bassac River.

So far, the situation is still under flood alert; the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology has prepared 14 heavy machinery, large sandbags 1,000 bags, 20,000 small sandbags, rock nets and a 24-hour team to continue to intervene at the dam to prevent the risk of flooding, which could damage people's homes in the area.

Note: The Ministery of Water Resources and Meteorology has forecast more heavy rainfall across Cambodia later this week.

Flooding in Cambodia leaves at least 11 dead
By Associated Press
Published: 08:11 BST, 11 October 2020 | Updated: 08:31 BST, 11 October 2020
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) - Flooding in Cambodia has killed at least 11 people since the beginning of the month, a disaster official said Sunday.

Seasonal rains were made worse by a tropical storm, which caused flash floods in several provinces last week, said Khun Sokha, a spokesman for the National Committee for Disaster Management.

Among the 11 dead, 10 have reportedly drowned in floodwaters and one was killed by lightning, he said. Several hundred families have been evacuated to higher ground, he said.

On Friday, Prime Minister HE ordered local authorities to mobilize assistance to those affected.

The Department of Public Works and Transportation on Sunday banned trucks from roads that were inundated in two worst-hit provinces in the country's northwest, Battambang and Pursat.

Cambodia to Face More Flash Floods as Rain Continues
AKP Phnom Penh, October 10, 2020 --

More rain, from moderate to heavy, is expected to come across Cambodia for some more days, therefore the country will face continued flash floods.

The weather forecast was updated by the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MOWRAM) and made known to the public via a press release issued today.

The north and northwestern provinces, next to Dangrek and Cardamom mountain ranges, would be the most affected, the same source stressed.

At the same time, MOWRAM added, the coastal areas would face rain, strong wind and high waves.

The ministry thus called upon the public to increase their vigilance to avoid any possible accidents.

In the weekly Cabinet Meeting on Friday, Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo HE ordered relevant ministries and institutions and sub-national administrations to take necessary measures to timely assist the affected people so as to reduce to the maximum the difficulties and the impact on people's properties and lives.

Flash floods have been hitting Battambang, Pursat, Banteay Meanchey, Oddar Meanchey, Preah Vihear and Kampong Speu provinces by inundating schools, administrative offices and other infrastructures, as well as rice fields. National Committee for Disaster Management and other concerned authorities have inspected the flood situation in the affected areas and distributed relief to affected people.
