UPDATE
Image
Cambodia News: Cambodian police have been investigating the "body abandoned in luggage case" that shocked the whole country in Cambodia, but it has now been solved and a Chinese suspect named Wu was arrested. According to people familiar with the matter, Wu used to work in a state-owned bank in Jiangsu, but later owed a large amount of debt, which was about 20 million Chinese RMB.

It is understood that the suspect Wu was an employee of the deceased Zhang. Zhang asked Wu to remit a sum of US$50,000 to his company in Hong Kong, but Wu did not send the money after receiving it. At first, Wu said that he could not send the money because of Pchum Ben holiday. But after the holiday, still no money was sent. Zhang was dissatisfied with this and the two men quarreled.

The actual crime of the "luggage abandonment case" occurred at around 11pm on the night of 22 September 2020. According to the confession of the suspect Wu, he felt humiliated by his boss, Zhang, and he owed him money, so he decided to kill him. At that time, he hit Zhang with a hammer several times and cut his throat with a knife.

After the murder, Wu put the deceased Zhang into a black trash bag, put the trash bag in the suitcase, and drove to the woods beside Highway No. 4 in Kampong Speu province, where he dumped the suitcase.

The next day after the murder, Wu went to a hospital in Phnom Penh to collect payment for medical products. A staff member of the hospital has told reporters that the deceased Zhang was in the medical device industry, and the suspect Wu helped Zhang drive and deliver goods. On the 23rd (the day after the murder case), Wu went to the hospital to collect a payment of US$860. He said that his boss had disappeared and that he had not been paid.

BACKSTORY:
According to people familiar with the matter, Zhang and Wu have been friends for more than 20 years. In the early years, Zhang was in the steel business in China and was well-known in the Zhangjiagang industry. He was well connected with state officials. Wu worked in a state-owned bank and once helped Zhang handle some loan business.
According to Lao Liu (a pseudonym), a common friend of the two, Wu's wife was a kindergarten teacher and his son was studying in a local prestigious high school. Life can be said to be happy. Wu is usually a good person, and "is loyal to his friends."
Zhang's steel business had been doing smoothly before, but later, something went wrong, the company went bankrupt and his wife divorced him. After Zhang moved to Cambodia, he switched to the medical equipment business.
A few years ago, Wu resigned from the bank and switched to small loans and borrowed money from relatives and friends. Later, the borrower ran away, causing Wu to owe a huge foreign debt. Wu once owed a debt of RMB 20 million. After repaying part of the loan and selling the mortgaged plant, there was still about 3 million in debt.

Lao Liu was also one of Wu's "creditors", and he lent his friend Wu 200,000 yuan. Last year, Wu successively repaid 60,000 yuan of the debt, leaving 140,000 yuan unpaid. Lao Liu says: "I couldn't get through to him on the phone in October last year. I knew he was in difficulty. I told him that I wouldn't chase him for the bill."

It is understood that a certain provincial general chamber of commerce is currently preparing to organize a fellow township association, and the deceased Zhang was also involved in the preparation work. After the murder occurred, the chamber of commerce discovered that Zhang was missing, and this was reported to the Chinese and Cambodian police.

After the police found the corpse in the “luggage abandonment case” on the 24th, the Chamber of Commerce judged that the deceased must be Zhang, according to the physical characteristics in the picture, and asked several of Zhang’s staff to go to the temple to identify him. Wu did not dare to go and recognize the corpse, so the police suspected that Wu had a problem, and after interrogation Wu confessed to that he murdered Zhang.

On investigation, the police found blood stains on the walls and ceiling in the house where Wu lived and found relevant evidence.
Those who knew the two friends are mystified how things could have turned out so badly between them after such a long friendship together.
