Re: RIP Alan Blake, British Expat in Kampot
Not sure how to contact the poster but my experience in Siem Reap may be of some help.
There should be an officer in charge of foreigner deaths in the province. Once you are able to contact this officer he will open an investigation. The death must be certified by a government doctor (not a private doctor). The police will arrange this. If you request it the doctor can give you an official death certificate in English. I was charged $80 by the doctor. The police will require an official acknowledgement from the deceased's embassy that they have been notified of the death. An email should be OK. If there are no suspicious circumstances the police will then close the case and release the body. A small contribution to the Policemen's Benevolent Society will smooth the way. In my case the British Embassy proactively called and offered assistance to repatriate the body. They will probably offer similar assistance if needed in this case. All this can be done in a matter of hours.
You do not need to worry too much - the police will take care of everything. Once they are finished if you want to do a local ceremony and/or cremation you should contact the nearest pagoda that has a crematorium.
