Amnesty International accuses Facebook of caving in to Thai Government

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Amnesty International accuses Facebook of caving in to Thai Government

I wish there was a comparable alternative to FB< Zuck has lost the plot.
Facebook has acquiesced to the Thai Government’s demands to remove a Facebook Group that had been critical of the Thai Monarchy. The page, “Royalist Marketplace”, had a following of a million people and administered by a self-exiled Thai living in Japan. The group’s page cannot be accessed in Thailand anymore.

In response, a representative from Amnesty International has accused Facebook of “caving in” to an “authoritarian government”.

“Once again Facebook is caving to the whims of repressive governments, while making meek appeals to human rights, setting another dangerous precedent for freedom of expression online.

And on another front from Reuters
BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha on Wednesday issued his sternest warning yet to protesters seeking his resignation, saying they were creating deeper divisions that could cause the collapse of the country.

“If we want to overcome each other politically, the nation will collapse,” Prayuth told reporters.

“If that happens, just wait, everybody will be on fiery land, engulfed in flames.”

His comments come after a month of near-daily rallies led by students calling for his ouster, a new constitution and fresh election, with some drawing over 10,000 protesters.

Some of those demonstrators have openly called for reforms of the country’s monarchy, a taboo topic in a country with a strict law that punishes perceived royal insults with up to 15 years in prison.

“I am at my wits end,” Prayuth added.

Prayuth has said the king had requested no prosecutions under the lese majeste laws for now.

Those arrested so far have all been released on bail.

It wasn't just Facebook, Google quietly removed translate of "Royalist Marketplace" also - strangely if you type anything else such as "Royalist Marketplace 123" you will get the Thai translation of "Royalist Marketplace" (ตลาดรอยัลลิสต์)

For the lazies who can read Thai & want to join the FB group anyway ... https://www.facebook.com/groups/160302545298190

So the message to the Thai regime is: TRYING TO BLOCK CONTENT IS FUTILE. In fact it’s worse than futile, it ensures that the content is seen by many more people, it is insanely counterproductive. No competent regime would even contemplate it
The same thing is happening with the Royalist Marketplace group. Each time it gets taken down, Pavin can just create a new one, and the situation will keep getting funnier, and even more people will want to join, and the regime will look more stupid than ever
As someone who frequently gets Facebook posts blocked in Thailand, I can explain the process, and also explain why it is *totally futile* for the Thai regime to try to block posts and groups on FB

Here’s what happens when the Thai regime wants to block a post. If you’re in Thailand you will need a VPN to see it now. If you are somewhere else you can see it.

First, Facebook requires the regime to get a court order. Thai bureaucracy is not very fast, so by the time the court order has been issued, weeks have already gone past during which everybody has seen the post
Once Facebook get the court order, they don’t exactly *rush* to process it. More time goes by. ....... So it took FIVE MONTHS. And in my experience this is a fairly typical timeframe for the process

@phuketrichard What do you even need a "comparable alternative" for? I use WhatsApp and Line groups to share specific stuff with specific groups of friends (or colleagues). Personally, I've never understood the appeal of broadcasting everything on Facebook. Most of what is posted there is tosh, unsurprisingly.
