When you get drunk & intoxicated without taking a single drink..

If you have something so weird, strange or off-topic to post and think it doesn't belong in any other forum; you're probably right. Please put all your gormless, half-baked, inane, glaikit ideas in here. This might also be a place where we throw threads that appear elsewhere that don't belong ANYWHERE end up, instead of having to flush them. FORUM RULES STILL APPLY.

When you get drunk & intoxicated without taking a single drink..

Post by Clutch Cargo »

No need to chase 50c beers :beer3:

After undergoing a course of antibiotics, a 47-year old man noticed he was feeling drunk at seemingly random intervals throughout the day – even without consuming alcohol.

This rare condition, known as auto-brewery syndrome, occurs when the body produces alcohol inside the gut. Doctors tried to treat the man with a low-carb diet and antifungal medications, typically effective for this condition.

But it didn’t help. The patient still experienced periodic, accidental drunkenness, in one case so severe that he lost his driving licence after a random police check.

What finally did work was a poop transplant, according to a case study published August 18 in Annals of Internal Medicine.

Doctors were able to transfer the faecal microbiota, the bacteria present in poop, into the patient’s small intestine. 34 months later, he continues to be symptom-free, according to the study.

The transplant was taken from the patient’s 22-year-old daughter.

I wouldn’t risk such a transplant for fear that the poop would reject me.
