Nepalese Workers in Phnom Penh Protest Over Exploitation

Cambodia News (Phnom Penh): On August 15, 2020, at 11 am, 27 Nepalese (25 men, two women) protested in front of their Nepalese boss's house in Dey Thmei village, Sangkat Kok Thlok, Khan Sen Sok, Phnom Penh.

All the foreigner workers had paid 5,000 USD each to the Nepalese boss for the right to come to Cambodia to work as road builders. After they arrived in Cambodia, his boss took all their passports, didn't renew their visas, and made them work illegally without any pay.

The work inspector said after negotiations with the Nepalese Embassy and the local police, the Nepalese boss agreed to pay the workers the following items:
1. The return flight tickets
2. The expired Visa fee
3. All their salary
4. Accomadation and food during the pandemic period

If the Nepalese boss doesn't keep his promise then the Nepalese Embassy will take over the issue. The protest was ended on August 16, 2020.

I'd guess it's because he has agreed to pay the workers, and even more important (for the Cambodians), he has agreed to pay the immigration overstay and send them home. It's a Nepalese problem and the Cambodians can wash their hands.
IMO he should be tried for human trafficking in Nepal, but probably won't. These sort of people are scum who prey on the desperate. Jeez, imagine paying for the fantastic privilege of being a road builder in Cambodia.

" Jeez, imagine paying for the fantastic privilege of being a road builder in Cambodia. "

Especially $5000 each.

Are Cambodian road builders very well paid ?, and if wages in Nepal are so low that road building in Cambodia is better, how did they each have $5000 to give anyway

The whole thing is just bizarre, hopefully they do all get paid their wages & get back home to their families again
