Khmer government "Cyber War" Team

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

I'm not sure I understood enough of it to decide if it's off topic or not.

From the link provided by Frank: The Council of Ministers’ Press and Quick Reaction Unit has created a “Cyber War Team” to monitor and collect information from Facebook and other websites in order to “protect the government’s stance and prestige,” according to a proclamation published in the Royal Gazette.

Yes, the local gov. is really on that prestige track. Behaving like rabid pigs but simultaneously trying to protect their prestige. So, yes...I DO believe that they control, censor and shut down websites that could undermine their corrupt system. Probably with the help of the Chinese government.

In this respect I forgot to ask: if a government manages to break into a forum like this, would it be possible for them to identify certain posters (ip, location.....)???? Is the forum protected against such attacks ???? Is the database encrypted ??

Also interesting: they haven't attacked homicidal, braindead forums like "Topix" where some idiotic Long Beach Cambodians deliver their disgusting speeches about Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines.

If the government issues a lawful warrant that the Singaporian host accepts then this can be acquired by wiretapping the traffic flowing in and out of the server. Therefor even an encrypted database wouldn't protect against the government, assuming that Singaporian authorities respect warrants issued by Cambodia (/Interpol).

The same can be said about countries that host e-mails for dissidents (Gmail, Yahoo).

SSL and ramfs mounted encrypted DB may be an idea, however possibly overkill without a clearly defined threat model. And in the end of the day the host can still dump the memory of the rented VPS.

Servers that you don't have physical access to cannot be trusted. See Onymous darknet raids, for example, which was made possible partially thanks to VPS hosts.

Appreciate the info BOFH. Time for self-censorship, I guess.....in the future I will be definitely more careful with that what I say on forums.
