TAT deputy governor dashes hopes of 2020 reopening for Thailand’s international borders
https://www.ttgasia.com/2020/08/07/tat- ... QXYWSSfTr4Thailand is unlikely to reopen its borders to international leisure visitors this year, predicted a deputy governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).
Speaking at a webinar hosted by Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office and TravelMole, Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhya, deputy governor for international marketing at TAT, said that there has been no talk of or timeline issued for reopening the country to inbound or outbound leisure travel during weekly Covid-19 national meetings.
He added that as part of the government’s “very, very cautious” approach to reopening borders, he does not expect Thailand to welcome leisure visitors until 2021.
Noted Ayudhya: “I see no signal from the government that the country will open this year. That’s putting lot of pressure on the tourism industry. The Christmas period, usually the high season, is in jeopardy and I’m looking horribly even to Chinese New Year in February, which is an iffy proposition at best now. Unfortunately, this is not a rosy picture.”

https://thepattayanews.com/2020/08/09/l ... e_mMl2212cA leading Thai doctor, Thira Woratanarat, a leading epidemiologist and on the faculty of medicine at Chulalongkorn University, has called for the Thai government to suspend any plans to allow foreign tourists for six to eighteen months.

I am willing to bet it will be more than 18 months.
Billionaires like the Chearavanont bros (CP) and Chalerm Yoovidhya (red bull) are doing fine.
Even the billionaires like the Chirathivats who run the Central Group can weather the storm. They'll just build an igloo from their stacks of money.

Re: Thailand Travel Restrictions and Info
It is better for Farangs to just forget about returning to Thailand as tourists, the rulers of Thailand want it all for themselves. Same as in many other countries.
Re: Thailand Travel Restrictions and Info
Already forgetting about Thailand, at least for the upcoming high season. By now it is pretty clear that there is no feedback channel from population to the rulers and the situation cannot be resolved peacefully.Dunderhead wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 3:10 pm It is better for Farangs to just forget about returning to Thailand as tourists, the rulers of Thailand want it all for themselves. Very few tourists would travel ONLY to these countries if they cant also visit another one , ( not referring to Chinese)

Few tourists is better than nothing, i hope Cambodia will have the same considerations by October. They survived Khmer Rouge after all. Airlines will have to do many route rearrangements and tickets will be more expensive, that’s a given. Suvarnabhumi was a major hub.phuketrichard wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 4:56 pmdo you think Burma, Laos, Cambodia will open if Thailand doesn't?hunter8 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 4:53 pmAlready forgetting about Thailand, at least for the upcoming high season. https://thethaiger.com/coronavirus/no-t ... -travllersThailand is currently caught in a number of quandaries that will continue to threaten the economy and stability of the country. Meanwhile the borders remain largely sealed, with the prospect of general tourist travel being pushed forward until at least 2021.
There have been a number of official comments to support the prediction that Thailand’s borders will remain closed to general traveller traffic for at least the rest of this year. From the Thai aviation authorities and a deputy governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
Just yesterday, Thailand’s Civil Aviation Authority says there will be no further re-opening of the Kingdom’s borders for the time being. Director-General Chula Sukmanop says that any decision to re-open to international air traffic needs to be taken in conjunction with the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration.

Re: Thailand Travel Restrictions and Info
Why though? Do they always need to look at the big neighbor? The big neighbor will have major political problems now, economy will have to wait.
There is no harm in opening and at least half of the tourists were coming from China, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan who don’t have to fly long hours. So it can be expected that Cambodia will open tourism at least to those four countries to regain half of the arrivals. Barangs may have to wait a bit longer.
