Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

"one is a 41-year-old Canadian woman from Uzbekistan. She arrived in Cambodia on Aug .7 along with her two children. She was admitted to Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital."

Unfortunately, she is a teacher at ISPP.

The implications of this being that all teachers who have recently returned from overseas at the 20 schools which are trying to get final approval will need to be re-tested.
I would also predict that this will delay the reopening of schools for at least a fortnight.

COVID-19: 2 Cured and 3 New Positive Cases Reported
AKP Phnom Penh, August 10, 2020 --
Cambodia reported two new recovered cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and three new confirmed cases, said the Ministry of Health in a press release issued this morning.

According to the press release, the two cured patients are Cambodian men aged 28 and 32 years old returning home from Russia via Malaysia. They have been allowed to be discharged from Chak Angre Health Centre, Phnom Penh after being tested negative twice consecutively.

On the other hand, it added, the three new cases were detected on Cambodian young men living in Thbong Khmum province. They returned home from Indonesia. They were tested positive on their 4th test or the 13th day of their quarantine. They were now admitted to a referral hospital in Thbong Khmum province.

This is why I think it is a mistake to abandon the second test requirement. You may be clear 72 hours before you travel, but you might pick it up in transit and the first test at the airport could miss it. The second test at 14 days ought to pick it up assuming you have been asymptomatic until then. It costs them nothing and if it is tied to the deposit refund it is very easy to achieve a 100% compliance rate.

It just seems they are risking all their good work for the want of a bit of, 'finish the job properly' attitude.

One of the two new patients is a 27-year-old Cambodian female peacekeeper returning from her UN mission in Mali. She was tested positive on her 5th test.
this struck me as odd

apparently she tested negative on arrival
did 14 days quarantine, and tested negative
then fell ill more than a week later, and tested negative
and finally tested positive a month after arriving

if so, either it's a false positive
or she clearly caught it in cambodia

the press release is leading people to assume it's another foreign import
that policy is quite clear

.

Not saying you are wrong, but there was a definite outbreak of coronavirus among the UN peacekeepers in Mali, so this is not unlikely. One Cambodian died.

One of the reasons that I wrote in an earlier post was "is it possible for the virus to lay dormant?" if it is then the carrier and virus will not be detected on testing. Still there was no answers.
It being that of a serious question, because if that is possible (and we have been told) the virus can change, before it was older or people with past or ongoing respiratory problems who would be mostly effected. Now we see young persons on the list. I think if the virus can lay dormant then there will be more upcoming problems.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

Covid fears stoked in T Khmum
Khorn Savi | Publication date 10 August 2020 | 22:43 ICT
Nine relatives of the 27-year-old female UN Blue Helmet peacekeeper who was confirmed Covid-19 positive on Saturday were placed in quarantine in Kandal province’s Takhmao town, provincial Department of Health director Kuoy Bunthoeurn said on Monday.

The nine have since been tested negative.

Bunthoeurn said authorities are looking for other people who might have come into contact with the peacekeeper.

This comes after Sithbo commune chief Om Leng issued a report to the Takhmao town hall on Monday, that the peacekeeper had travelled home to her village on July 30. The report was circulated on Facebook.

Leng said she had cooked food for elderly people, handed out money and offered food to monks at Chumpou Prek Pagoda. She had tested positive for the virus after she ran a high fever and had a runny nose, the report said.

“Currently, residents are deeply concerned because the patient had contacted many neighbours. Therefore, we urge the town governor to please be informed and take action favourably,” it added.

Leng could not be reached for comment on Monday.

Takhmao town governor Nou Sovannara said that while nine members of the woman’s family had been kept in quarantine, he had not yet received a report from the commune side.

Bunthoeurn said the provincial health department will release a statement clarifying the report released by Sithbo commune.

But in the meantime, the Kandal provincial administration issued a notice denying the commune report and maintained that it was incorrect.

The report, it said, differed from the observations of health officials and information given by the patient and her family members.

In a separate incident in Tbong Khmum province, a 29-year-old Cambodian man who recovered from the disease tested positive again after he left the hospital.

The man came in direct or indirect contact with at least 43 people in the province and they have all been ordered quarantined, provincial health department director Keo Vannak said.

Vannak said he had arrived in Cambodia from Saudi Arabia on July 10, and had been kept in quarantine at a hotel in Phnom Penh. His first test returned negative.

He said after the patient’s second test came back positive, he was treated at Chak Angre Krom Health Centre in Phnom Penh. He was not allowed to leave the centre after his third test also returned positive.

But after his fourth and fifth tests came back negative, the man was allowed to leave the centre and travelled to his home in Kor commune’s Kandal village in Tbuong Khmum district, Tbong Khmum province.

Vannak said 43 people in the village were found to have been in contact the patient. Of them, nine had been in direct contact with him. They have been kept in quarantine at Samdech Decho HE Suong High School in Krong Suong.

The other 34 people were held in quarantine in the primary school in the patient’s village.

Is there something wrong with the testing or is it the virus is harder to detect

Fake Covid-19 health certificates perhaps?
