No matter how many times one explains that the US with 4% of world population can't have 25% of deaths if you are using honest stats the majority still believes the stats. If you told them to shave their heads and cover themselves in vegetable oil to fight covid many would comply.

All four factors were evident in Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea’s relatively quick and effective response to the outbreak of COVID-19.
Were all four factors evident here?

Were any of them?

90 minute test available very soon at an airport near you. An international certicate issuable while you wait. Normality to travel is now technically feasable.

Why not? Genuinely asking, not just being argumentative. If people elsewhere take great precautions and the US doesn't, which we aren't, why couldn't we have Significantly more cases of this highly contagious virus? Is it just a mathematically impossible thing that I'm not seeing due to not knowing population or something like that?

For the record, I do agree that the numbers simply aren't reported accurately. God only knows how many Chinese died when it first blew up. If not, it's only because the Chinese government created/released it intentionally and knew how to deal with it. Otherwise there's no way their numbers are remotely accurate.
Do you think the parents of baby boomers whined so much when the boomers started changing society? And yet the whiney ones like to call young people "snowflakes." Hmm...

Trump claims lockdowns 'do not prevent infection in the future' and undermines Dr. Fauci's push to reconsider shutdowns in certain states

President Donald Trump on Monday claimed that the lockdowns implemented during the coronavirus pandemic haven’t reduced future infections and “inflict more harm” than they prevent.

“Lockdowns do not prevent infection in the future – they just don’t. It comes back, many times. It comes back,” Trump said at his press briefing.

Earlier on Monday, Dr. Anthony Fauci said certain US states that are experiencing rising infection rates and case surges should consider reimposing at least partial shutdowns.

Trump went on to argue that lockdowns, which involve shuttering non-essential businesses and closing schools, are designed to “buy time” for states and localities to build hospital capacity, research the virus, and develop treatments, but aren’t effective in preventing future outbreaks.

Eight people have now died of coronavirus in the latest outbreak in Vietnam, which started last weekend, and another 18 infections have been confirmed today.

Vietnam reports 18 more Covid-19 patients, all but one linked to Da Nang
By Le Nga August 4, 2020 | 06:42 pm GMT+7

Another 18 patients of Covid-19 were confirmed Tuesday evening, with 17 linked to Da Nang and one repatriated from Equatorial Guinea, raising active cases to 288.

Sixteen patients, numbered from 653 to 668, are Da Nang residents between 8 to 93 years of age.

Eight of them were diagnosed with Covid-19 when staying in quarantine in Da Nang after they had contact with infected cases, five are family members who had taken care of patients at the Da Nang Hospital, one is a medical worker at the Da Nang Hospital for Women and Children, one works as a guard at Da Nang Central Bus Station in Lien Chieu District and used to have a health check at the Family Hospital in Hai Chau District, and another is a patient at Da Nang Hospital.

"Patient 669," a 50-year-old man, lives in Quang Vinh Ward of Bien Hoa Town in the southern Dong Nai Province. He is a doctor at Dong Nai General Hospital and while visiting a family member at the Internal Medicine Department of the Da Nang Hospital recently, he had contact with a person who was later diagnosed with Covid-19.

"Patient 670," also 50, is among 219 Vietnamese workers that were brought home via a repatriation flight from Equatorial Guinea on July 29. All passengers on this flight were sent to quarantine upon entry in Hanoi. 20 other passengers on the flight had been confirmed infected earlier.

With the 18 cases added, Vietnam has recorded 670 Covid-19 cases, 288 of them active and 374 have recovered, including four confirmed Covid-19 free on Tuesday afternoon.

Since last Friday, eight Covid-19 patients have died, including two on Tuesday morning, after contracting the new coronavirus at hospitals in Da Nang. They are all over 50 and have suffered from chronic diseases for years.

In the past 10 days since Covid-19 community infections resurfaced in Vietnam, Da Nang alone has recorded 158 cases, its neighbor Quang Nam Province got 44, HCMC had eight, Dak Lak in the Central Highlands and Quang Ngai in the central region had three each, Hanoi and Dong Nai two each, while northern Thai Binh and Ha Nam provinces reported one each.

Lockdowns do prevent infection, with small to medium efficiency. They also have a harmful side effect of preventing life.

It is a crime against humanity to force everyone to not have a life because of some senior and/or obese citizens who may or may not (and most are not) be at risk.

The enthusiasm for lockdowns quickly diminishes, it seems, after US and Europe both published economic stats end of July that showed a multi-decade setback of economies. The side effect of preventing life is very costly.

Vietnam deploys elite team to Danang to curb new wave of COVID-19

Hanoi tightens border control as illegal Chinese migrants reportedly surge

TOMOYA ONISHI, Nikkei staff writerAugust 5, 2020 15:01 JST

HANOI -- Vietnam's government has dispatched a team of what officials called the country's "most experienced" medical workers to Danang, in an effort to stem a resurgence of coronavirus infections.

The outbreak in the coastal city, which is one of the country's top tourist destinations, is so serious that Deputy Health Minister Nguyen Truong Son has been sent there to lead the containment efforts.

The move came as the country tightened border controls in response to an influx of undocumented Chinese workers. But the government, which had been praised for keeping infections low at the beginning of the pandemic, has stopped short of linking illegal Chinese immigrants to the resurgent coronavirus.

Health authorities said infections linked to Danang reached 224 as of Wednesday. Vietnam's total number of cases reached 672 on the same day. The country, which had managed to record zero deaths through July 30, reported eight deaths so far.

The team of more than 60 medical experts sent to Danang includes staff from Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, which made international headlines for curing a British pilot who was in critical condition with COVID-19.

To quell the new wave of possible infections, Hanoi has reintroduced lockdowns in certain districts across the country. More than 133,000 people are under quarantined nationwide as of Tuesday, including 1,258 in hospital, more than 20,000 in quarantine facilities and the rest in self-isolation.

Meanwhile, Hanoi has been trying to stem of the flow of illegal immigrants from China, where the coronavirus originated and which shares a more-than-1,200-km border with Vietnam. Officials said Monday 504 undocumented Chinese immigrants had been detained since January. Some of the Chinese were seeking jobs after being driven out of their country by natural disasters and the coronavirus pandemic, Maj. Gen. To An Xo, a spokesman for the Ministry of Public Security, told a news conference Monday.

Xo said his ministry urged border patrol units and local authorities to follow Hanoi's guidelines on coronavirus prevention and control, including immigration checks at border crossings and international airports.

Illegal entries were mostly made by Chinese nationals and Vietnamese working in neighboring countries, Xo said. Vietnam also shares borders with Laos and Cambodia.

The Ministry of Health on Tuesday updated its COVID-19 diagnostic and treatment guide. Nguyen Van Kinh, who chairs the Vietnamese Society of Infectious Diseases, said the new strain of virus found in patients in Danang belonged to a mutation known as D614G, which has been linked to infections in Africa and Bangladesh.

"The salient feature of SARS-CoV-2 virus is its large size, contagiousness and genetic modification with symptoms caused by inflammation in the upper respiratory tract," he said, referring to the novel coronavirus's official name.

On Sunday, Nguyen Thanh Long, the acting health minister, said a mutation "has increased susceptibility, leading to high rates of infection."

"The infection rate is about five and six people, compared to the older strains with the rate of 1.8 to 2.2 people," he said. The rate equates to how many people contract the virus in a period of time after having close contact with an infected individual.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on Monday stressed the importance of achieving "dual goals" -- containing the pandemic while fostering economic growth -- at a cabinet meeting. Accelerating disbursement of public investment was identified as the best solution to deliver that goal.

I will be very surprised if no huge social and political changes have happened by this time next year in many countries. And those who are at the helm are bringing ousting onto themselves at full speed. All for a flu. Comedians will have enough work material decades after this.

It almost looks like there is some world government and they got bored with the current world order and said “let’s f.ck it all up and see what happens!” Like a toddler who build some structure from playing cubes and then smashes all over and starts anew. Surreal all this, all for a flu. Mind is epicly boggled thinking about it.
