Ha! I often wondered why they do that.armchairlawyer wrote: ↑Mon Aug 03, 2020 12:09 pmTrue. You can see them showing them off, zigzagging through the pedestrians on the Riverside promenade in the late afternoon.
Yesterday it was a bit wet but great for exercising due to the cool temperatures. They had brought their fashion bikes with the fat wheels as usual but were riding very slowly or pushing them. I wondered why do that when it'a a perfect day for exercise. Then I got it, those bikes don't have mudguards and their arses were getting wet.
A local I know just spent $6k on a bicycle. It won’t make him any quicker or fitter. It’s just “look at me!”.

Cambodia’s bicycle exports exceed 1.5 million units
5 November 2020
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia – The latest figures of the country’s Ministry of Commerce indicate an increasing number of exported regular bicycles. From January to September this year, Cambodia shipped a total of 1.5 million units. The Ministry of Commerce’s report did not reveal the exact export volume to the EU.
In the first half of this year, Cambodia exported 1.1 million regular bicycles of which more than half were shipped to the EU. In the third quarter this total export volume increased to 1.5 million units generating a total value of € 339 million. This was reported by the Khmer Times today.
Export volume to EU
From January to September the export volumes amounted to 360,000 units to Germany, 150,000 to Belgium and 90,000 to the Netherlands. While Cambodia still holds the leading position as suppliers of regular bicycles in the EU, the import volumes are declining. The latest Eurostat data of earlier this year showed a 7% decrease in regular bicycles imported from this South East Asian country from January and May. Whether this was the result of Covid-19 or other market conditions was unclear.
Position in the supply chain
Cambodia became the largest regular bicycle supplier for the EU in 2017, overtaking Taiwan, which had held the number one spot for two decades. This position became doubtful after the EU formally informed Cambodia on February 11, 2019 that it had begun a process that could result in the country losing its preferential trading terms because of its poor record on human rights and rule of law. As this trade journal reported, the outcome could have major implications for the country’s main assemblers of regular bicycles Strongman, A&J and Asama.

Re: Kingdom to become a key manufacturing base for US bike firm
I think it's fantastic how popular cycling has become in Cambodia in the past decade or so. The companies that produce them here are mainly Taiwanese or US, components are likely Japanese. It's a good earner for someone, especially lycra manufacturers.
Silence, exile, and cunning.
Re: Kingdom to become a key manufacturing base for US bike firm
Unfortunately this is basically a NAFTA kind of thing, the majority of components are made abroad, shipped here, “assembled” i.e. put the seat post on, then exported and qualified for eba etc. it would be great to see more domestic manufacturing.
up to you...
Re: Kingdom to become a key manufacturing base for US bike firm
The vast majority of bicycles are manufactured in Taiwan (Giant make most for other manufacturers) or China. High end ($10k+) bikes (carbon) are made in US and EU.

Re: Kingdom to become a key manufacturing base for US bike firm
I wonder how many bikes get exported from here and then re-imported? It happens with clothes. So you end up paying a bit more than the western RRP even though it was manufactured here, because it's gone half way around the world and back.CEOCambodiaNews wrote: ↑Sat Jan 16, 2021 10:58 pm Bicycles imported to Cambodia in 2020 totaled to $8.38 million, with demand down 19.33 per cent overall.
