Cambodia-China Friendship Thbong Khmum Hospital Construction to Complete in 2021
AKP Phnom Penh, June 25, 2020 --
The construction of the nearly-US$50 million Cambodia-China Friendship Thbong Khmum Hospital is due to complete in September 2021, H.E Dr. Cheam Chansophorn, Governor of Thbong Khmum province told a press conference organised here this morning by the Royal Government Spokesperson Unit.

Located on an area of 24,300 square metres, the 300-bed hospital will be equipped with up-to-date medical equipment.

The ground-breaking ceremony for the hospital’s construction took place in March 2019 under the presidency of Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo HE and Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Wang Wentian.

Once finished, the Cambodia-China Friendship Thbong Khmum Hospital will become a regional hospital serving the people of Kratie, Rattanakiri, Stung Treng, and Mondulkiri provinces.

That's good , having a new hospital and equipped with up-to-date medical equipment. But I get this feeling that there is something missing.

Wow, a 300 bed hospital just 350 km away from Ratanakiri. Things are improving fast.

interesting. they defunded the project by $30 million, it's now only 300 beds (not bedrooms, which is small I believe), and shaved off 2 years of construction. Somewhere right now somebody is smitten by the savings and bragging about it. This sounds like a "let's get some good headlines today" without worrying about the quality of the hospital of tomorrow.
Still here, in country...

From 80mil down to 50mil... Wondering where did the 30mil went to???
So 11-storey building will have 400 beds, 132 rooms and 219 restrooms becoming 300beds?

Speaking at the event, HE expressed his profound gratitude to China for providing grant aid to Cambodia for the project, saying that it is crucial to improve wellbeing for rural Cambodian people.
Cambodian Health Minister Mam Bunheng said the 300-bed hospital, to be built on the land area of 24,300 square meters, will be equipped with high-technology medical equipment.

with high-technology medical equipment means only catering to the rich people isn't it?
So how can this be improving well-being to rural Cambodian ?

Modern Chinese-funded hospital in Tbong Khmum nearing completion
Long Kimmarita | Publication date 15 November 2021 | 21:19 ICT

The construction of the Tbong Khmum Cambodia-China Friendship Hospital in Tbong Khmum province is scheduled to be completed at the end of this month, with its opening planned for early next year.

Officials said the new hospital would serve people better as it is equipped with modern medical technology that has not previously been available in Tbong Khmum and neighbouring provinces.

The hospital was built at a cost of more than $50 million and funded by a Chinese grant. It is located in Srolob commune’s Nikum Leu village of Tbong Khmum district.

Ek Kheang, director of the hospital, said it consists of eight buildings with five floors each. The buildings house departments for gynecology, pediatrics, general medicine, administration and a dormitory.

Provincial health department director Keo Vannak told The Post on November 15 that the construction started in March 2019 and the provincial administration plans to put them into use in early 2022.

He said that while the buildings nears completion, the hospital is also setting up a commission for human resources to recruit health officials from various institutions across the country.

“We plan to equip this hospital with 300 beds and we have a lot of skilled positions to fill. What is concerning is that in Tbong Khmum province we don’t have enough skilled medical workers to staff the hospital yet,” he said. “We will strive to develop our existing human resources and recruit additional help.”

$50m is a low number... I'd imagine it to be hard to fund any ongoing work other than the initial acquisition and construction costs.

Hospitals are buildings with cool gear.

What makes a hospital a place where lives are saved is the ongoing research onsite, the annual operating budget and the research grants. Not sure how
much they are planning to put into this venture for the next 15 years. Got to wait and see...

If not, it's just a glorified medic base.

Either ways... it's a good start, I guess.

I'm staying apprehensive for now.

So the idea was in place back in 2018 and the start of the construction was in March 2019 and suddenly someone has realised that they don't have enough doctors, nurses, specialist technicians and trained staff? Cambodian planning at it's finest again. It just seems that again that people in the positions of power can only see what is in front of them and they do not have foresight to look at what is required if it is not written on paper for them. That time between 2018 and now would have seen the training of more than enough personnel to have in some cases finished. I realise the lock downs have interrupted life but training could have been well underway earlier than lockdowns started and continued online.

Call me Mr Picky, but I prefer my doctors to have much more than 3 years training, with none of it online, and at least 5 years of post qualification experience. Nurses too for that matter.
