Thailand Travel Restrictions and Info

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

The first group may not include those under the so-called “travel bubble” international pact as they may be required to undertake state quarantine on entry:
1. Businessman and investors (around 700 have registered to enter).

2. Skilled labourers and exporters who need to inspect factories or for specific business purposes (around 22,000 have registered).

3. Foreigners married to Thais, or permanent residents of Thailand (around 2,000 have registered).

4. Medical and wellness tourists (around 30,000 have registered).

well, doesn't sound lke a lot of fun

Here’s some of the main restrictions, among the long list…
• Restrict the number of customers

• Check body temperature of patrons and provide hand sanitiser

• Groups of people sitting together – maximum 5. They will have to sit 1 metre away from each other.

• At least 2 metres between tables, or install barriers

• No singing or dancing (that includes your club team song after the 9th beer)

• Drinks in glasses only, not bottles

• Staff must wear face masks AND face shields

• No ‘gathering’, ‘shouting’, or ‘wandering’

• Musicians and performers must wear face shields (who wants to hear those silly lyrics anyway!?)

• No competitions or group activities, including pool and darts

• Ensure social distancing in smoking areas

• Ban ‘product presenters’ from sitting with guests (huh?!)

They'll disregard at least half of it anyway, but having such a nice long list is great for the crooks who will make the rounds collecting fines or bribes.

I went to a popular Japanese restaurant in Bangkok last week. It was just as crowded as before COVID-19, no meaningful social distancing was enforced or indeed possible and everyone had a great time as far as I can tell. Now, if the shit-brown police had made an appearance, I'm sure fines would have been in order.

Still final approval to come Monday but:

Headline: All [Thailand bar] business to resume on July 1

All businesses and activities suspended to control the spread of coronavirus disease will be allowed to resume on July 1 - including entertainment venues and "soapy massage" parlours.

Dr Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesman of the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, announced the decision on Wednesday.

some good info for the future
Confusion and sporadic information from the network of Royal Thai Embassies worldwide sees only a small number of foreign spouses apply to come home to the kingdom as officials move to iron out doubts raised this week over the ‘tourism bubble’ concept. This may mean incoming flights from July 1st and Thailand’s first tourists from August as the kingdom plans to move away from Chinese mass tourism for now.

ahh ha,yep, some can come back but wait..
14 days quarantine!!
Following the announcement that Thailand would once again open its doors to certain categories of international visitors, the government’s Covid-19 task force has confirmed most will have to agree to a 14 day quarantine. It’s understood the first group to be granted entry to the Kingdom from July 1 will include businesspeople, skilled workers and experts, teachers, students, and medical tourists, as well as foreign residents with Thai families here.

Dr. Taweesilp Visanuyothin, from the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration says the government expects around 50,000 foreigners under the new rules, 30,000 of whom are expected to be arriving for medical treatment. In addition, officials expect over 15,000 skilled workers, 2,000 teachers and students, and 2,000 foreign residents with Thai families. Around 700 foreign investors or business people are also expected.

Dr. Taweesilp says most foreign visitors will be required to undergo a 14 day quarantine period, to ensure Thailand can continue its successful suppression of the Covid-19 virus. The 14 day quarantine has also been a requirement for all repatriating Thais. He adds that many have already registered for permission to come to Thailand and have agreed to the quarantine requirements.

In the case of those coming on short visits, on business, or as guests of the government, they will have to agree to be tested for Covid-19 before departure in their home country, and again on arrival in Thailand. They must also have health insurance that covers Covid-19 treatment, and agree to be monitored by medical staff during their stay.

From August 1, Thailand may implement a “travel bubble” scheme, whereby tourists from countries or cities that have also successfully suppressed the virus, may enter into a reciprocal agreement for the sharing of some tourism and business trips.

It’s understood all of the above proposals will be submitted to the government’s Covid-19 taskforce for consideration this coming Monday.

In a funny way, those governments who have (presumably) eradicated the virus have boxed themselves into a corner. Imposing onerous restrictions on visiting foreigners will hurt trade, investment and tourism much more than the initial lockdowns. And indefinitely.

Unless and until a miracle happens, what's the way out?
