Vehicle Import Duties

Post by Doc67 »

What are the Import duties for used vehicles, say 5-10 years old.

Anyone have any experience of this? Is it a minefield or just quicksand?

As always, many thanks in advance...

Matt Lee at CNM Motors specialises in this stuff.

My info is outdated, but from memory, it's taxed on vehicle age, class (luxury, utility, sport etc), cubic capacity and is based off a sliding scale that goes back around 6 years. If a vehicle is older than that; you pay the rate for the oldest year on the sliding scale.

AFAIK these can be negotiated if you know the right guys. You make a "deal" before shipping any goods to Cambodia. This applies to all goods that have a hefty tax/duty.
work is for people who cant find truffles

Hi @lostjeremy
Could you share the name of the regulation/law that the table is retrieved from?
Thank you!

There is a book issued by Customs that lists the minimum values allowed to be declared for various commodities which has this or a similar table, but the book itself is only in Khmer script AFAIK. The above shows the minimum you can value the car at. The actual rates are on http://www.customs.gov.kh/publication-a ... odia-2017/ Type 8703 in the search box to take you to the right section, the rates are cumulative. You also have to add the freight cost from origin to port of arrival and an amount for insurance (normally 0.85%) to get the amount you actually pay the Duty/ST/VAT on. That's the official way anyway...

For vehicles younger than those in the chart above I think you need to consult the book issued by Customs that lists minimum values based on make and model. I only have access to the 2019 issue.

I explained that before in another thread. I am attaching the 2019 schedule for MB and Audi, and some other premium makes. There is an update out for 2020 manufactured cars. There is one trick the Customs department uses: they don't use the date of first registration but the model year, e. g. it could have been made in 2019 but is a 2020 model, which is determined by the VIN, . Any car made after July 31 will automatically be considered next year's model, no matter what the VIN says. The 10th digit of VIN gives you the model year. Nothing to it if you use an agent.
