Re: How to Help Lone, Lost Western Woman in Phnom Penh ?
In my 20’s I felt entitled to live within my means, and having worked full time since 2 weeks after my 16th birthday (nobody was insisting that I must go on to college) meant I lived quite nicely, all paid for by me. These “begpackers” begging to finance their hippy idle, aren’t I special “alternative” lifestyle can go fuck themselves, and so can anyone trying to justify them.newkidontheblock wrote: ↑Fri Jun 19, 2020 3:32 amI don’t remember feeling entitled in my 20’s. I was told in no I certain terms if I flunked out of college or somehow didn’t make it, I could starve and die on the streets.Yerg wrote:Welcome to the entitled 20’s. Why is this all such a surprise?
My 20’s were spent glued to a book or otherwise busting my ass to avoid starving and dying on the streets.
This must be in alternate reality zone.

As did I.Big Daikon wrote: ↑Fri Jun 19, 2020 7:31 amDifferent generation, I guess. I spent my twenties in the military to pay for college.
Best decision I ever made and the best caliber of people I've ever had the pleasure to work along side, in my life.

There have always been anti war types. My grandad (Navy) broke all contact with his brother because of it.Big Daikon wrote: ↑Fri Jun 19, 2020 10:34 amTakes all kinds, doesn't it?phuketrichard wrote: ↑Fri Jun 19, 2020 7:48 amMy late teens traveling and protesting against the fucking war an military!!!Big Daikon wrote: ↑Fri Jun 19, 2020 7:31 amDifferent generation, I guess. He said “I saw a lot of death and lost a lot of friends and still carry a painful injury now to defend my country and it’s people. My brother smoked a joint, waved a flag and fought police”
Don’t listen to Chinese whispers.

Now I'm quite anti-war and non-interventionist. Like to think I've learned a little.

In the Cambodian dictionary, help is spelled M-O-N-E-Y. Apparently this woman has even figured that out.explorer wrote: ↑Tue Jun 16, 2020 8:40 pm I am very outgoing, and talk to large numbers of people. Old and young. Barang from the many different countries. A lot of Jewish people. I have spent time with Korean people. Occasionally Chinese who speak English. And others. I have many Cambodian friends, a lot of them are students.
I am amazed that other people on this forum don't seem to be as outgoing, and don't seem to be interested in finding out if she really needs help.
And comments like:
You could talk to her before coming to any conclusions.
I am not in PP, and she not be in the same place again.
I have a friend who works not far from where the woman was seen. I have asked her to keep an eye out for her, and if she sees her to talk to her and find out what she can. A Cambodian girl is not scared to talk to her.
If anyone else meets her, find out what you can.

No need to exaggerate.clutchcargo wrote:You're exaggerating right? I've always wondered why many Asian students from countries like Taiwan, China, Sth Korea and Japan work so hard compared to their Western equivalents, although I figured parents of those countries must drum it into them from a very young age.
Being the only non-European kid in a town a couple centuries old that was half Italian and half Irish, it was all about survival.
There is no support system, no others like you.
Make it or die.
Is it the best way?
After a couple of decades of existential crisis, I’m not sure.
Plus Asian culture seems to be authoritarian and paternalistic than others. More emphasis on homogeneity, and less on individualism.
Sorry for wondering way off topic.

newkidontheblock,
thank you for changing the the topic (lets just call it, "psst, there's a poor non asian that needs me plz help me get her" your input on your hood is intriguing - i propose a new thread on it.
I never made a thread can you please describe this neighborhood more and I'd like to see how other gentle readers may have similar backgrounds. My town was not so split but the Italians definitely were dominant number wise in many areas near my town. We did have wards that were ethnically distinct and still evident thru the 1990's.
Of course I am simply an Upstate boy and you sound more like a Big Apple or related guy. Am I correct? and what about this new thread?

What a lot of discussion over a fucking barang beggar. She should go and make an honest living in a karaoke or a hostess bar.
Re: How to Help Lone, Lost Western Woman in Phnom Penh ?
You are right. In our culture we often help people in ways that does not involve giving them money. When you talk about helping Cambodian people, in their mind, helping them means giving them money.

Big Apple was 5 hrs away. Drove there in the morning, bought Chinese groceries and had lunch, then drove back, every few weeks or months or so.bossho wrote:Of course I am simply an Upstate boy and you sound more like a Big Apple or related guy. Am I correct? and what about this new thread?
The town was founded from generations of Italian stone cutters, with the Irish coming later. Everyone was related (except me). Picking a fight with an Italian ended up fighting them all, same with picking a fight with an Irish. School safety director was a retired marine drill sargent. Retired godfather lived across the street.
Dad kept his nose on the grindstone and worked. No matter how long, no matter the conditions. The underlying philosophy of every western movie and TV show was an antithesis of their beliefs. That success only comes through academics, hard work, and never making waves, the one and only path.
It’s a crisis that’s taken me a few decades to finally resolve. Namely, what is the purpose of life, what is success. Is there only one path?
Sorry for the long diversion. And opening a big can of worms.
