I want to challenge for the ONE belt: Rothana
Last Friday, at ONE: Dreams of Gold, Chan Rothana, unanimously Cambodia’s finest mixed martial artist, defeated Cuban Olympic wrestler Gustavo “El Gladiador” Balart for arguably the biggest win in the history of Cambodian MMA.
The win came via unanimous decision after three rounds of intense action in Bangkok, Thailand and the 33-year-old Fight for Good representative said the advice of his team was integral to success.
“I watched many videos of Gustavo before my big victory last week, said the Selapak coach and founder. “My coach and my team gave me guidance about his strengths and weaknesses, so I knew how to deal with him,” Rothana says.
“I think he tried to take me down too much. After his takedowns in the first and second round, I could measure his strength, and he was not as dangerous.”
When the final round began, Balart was visibly tired, and Rothana stayed on his feet for most of the remaining five minutes to launch an incredible comeback.
He started to throw kicks without fear of being taken down, and went all-out in search of a finish with powerful punches that had Balart on the ropes.
“I turned things around in the third round by establishing my kickboxing, and hit him with kicks, knees, and punches,” he added. “If I didn’t do that, it was going to be tough to win.”
Rothana, now 7-3 as a mixed martial artist, is riding a three-bout winning streak – one of the best winning runs in his division – and the flyweight contender is aiming higher than ever.

A 'soft' strategy helps Chan Ratana succeed in MMA
19, Jun 2020, 7:59 am
Each fighter has his or her own strategy of hitting and defending in the ring. In fact, Cambodian MMA player Chan Ratana seems to be more successful with a "soft" strategy, which is a strategy to hold off and slow down opponents. Through this strategy, Ratana has beaten opponents no more than 3 times in the last few MMA games. According to him, this strategy is an effective technique for slowing down a fighter and weakening him.
The player from Banteay Meanchey says: “When I had the opportunity, I found the opening when I got up, I hit again because I know my partner exerts a lot of energy because when we are separated, he needs time to breathe, but I do not allow him to breathe - I hit, because I still have breathing, so our opponent has no time to catch his breath."

Chan Rothana has a ‘good chance’ of beating Chinese rival, says MMA expert
December 18, 2020
A Cambodia-based British mixed martial arts (MMA) expert said Chan Rothana has a ‘good chance’ of beating his Chinese opponent in their upcoming bout in Singapore.
The Cambodian martial arts legend and Cellcard brand ambassador will face Xie Wei later today in a flyweight MMA bout at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
The much-anticipated fight between Chan and Xie is part of ONE Championship’s “ONE: COLLISION COURSE”. The event will have five other bouts featuring fighters from Russia, Thailand, United States, Singapore and South Korea.
Alan Mccune, head coach at Kun Khmer Warriors Fight Team and Phnom Penh MMA, said Chan has the experience to beat Xie. Mccune is also the trainer of Nou Srey Pov, Cambodia’s top female MMA fighter.
“Rothana has a good chance of winning against his Chinese opponent. My Reason is that Rothana has the experience of over 200 fights and in ONE (Championship), he has seven wins and three losses,” he pointed out.
Xie, for his part, has slightly more wins in ONE Championship at 11 and three losses.
Mccune also noted that Chan has the desire to fight hard and is highly-skilled.
“I have seen that Rothana has the desire to fight hard, and when put into bad situations, he finds a way to escape and dominate,” he said.

Good fight. Unlucky to make a mistake and he was TKO'd in the final round.
