Following the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Outbreak - News and Discussion

Yeah, that place out 'there'. Anything not really Cambodia related should go here.

Experts claim that at least 60 per cent of the population would need to have Covid-19 antibodies before herd immunity is reached.
The government had hoped for 20 per cent immunity by the end of May, but instead only 7.3 per cent have it.
This is lower than most countries that enforced lockdowns, including the UK and US, yet with still no lockdown in place, the full impact for Sweden may still a long way from being realised.

Well, the UK test for antibodies in the UK was only approved on the 13th of May and is only just becoming available, so there is no way that any number from the 16th of May is anything other than completely made up. Until they test 1 million of London's 9 million population, any number for herd immunity is unreliable. Plus there is increasing evidence of some people who get infected, but were asymptomatic, and go on not to develop antibodies. How are they going to be counted?

Herd immunity only exists if the members of the herd who catch the disease and recover are immune. At the moment there is scant evidence that people who recover have any longterm immunity so it doesnt really matter how many people have taken one for the herd. If immunity is for less than 6 months then its not going to help. on the otjer hand, letting it spread and killoff the old and the weak may be a desirable outcome for some governments :-(

Financially, it's desired by all governments. Work, borrow and spend until you are 70 and then drop dead please so the government and their mates in the pension companies don't have to pay you and you don't clog up the health system. Alcohol, tobacco and junk food nicely promotes this policy.

Ha harrr :D LOL
watching the Swedish Model devotees squirm.

Posting "dam lying statistics" to challenge the bald-faced facts.
Suddenly shifting the focus to Japan
Japan Japan the new enlightenment hero!!

But sorry guys, the situation there is nothing like Sweden, and not the simplistic situation you are trying to make out.
Distinctive social habits effectively replicated many the best Covid-19 public health practices, and even some the lockdown features.
Abe still ended up having to declare the whole country as a state of emergency.

The Swedish experiment was bold but a disaster, causing thousands of unnecessary deaths.
The architect of the strategy admitted that himself - yesterday.

Just be gracious guys

But why? Sweden was not wrong. Covid deaths that were supposed to happen in other European countries were simply delayed by a few months, at the end of the year there will be no difference between Sweden and other European countries in the number of deaths per a million of population.

Funny how the same people who believed how scary this covid was to justify drastic measures now believe the same media telling lies that the danger is now contained and point fingers at the “bad boy” Sweden because it made them lose face. I guess some people just like fairytales.

The reality is this covid is not going to disappear. The race is not over yet, it is only starting. You count the chicken before they hatch. There is a whole lot more losing of face to come as everybody will come to see that covid is staying with us, like flu or tuberculosis, no matter what. And that is good, losing of face i mean, stupidity should be exposed for all to see.

BEcoz you ALL flocked it up.
You are comparing no lockdown with a flock-up
sorry but "stupidity should be exposed for all to see"

It did not have to be that way. Especially for "manageable" countries like Sweden where they could have had the same situ as those few others that have escaped the worst effects.
And if you think the situ in eg Oz and NZ at the end of the year will be the same as all yours, you are simply ill-informed.
Same same with escaping the worst effects on the Ekomony.
sorry to keep banging on about this but "wise action should also be exposed for all to see"

(only imo, of course. )

The worst effects are yet to come, my friend. They will not be directly related to covid, but to the economic crisis. A few revolutions, a few wars, years of suffering. Media will switch attention to those hot topics.

They have escaped the worst effects, they have not trashed their economy which, in time, will be the worst effect. The final numbers for that escapade are not in yet but when they are they will be biblical...

The Apocalypse?

might be a good thing in the long run

Look, i think i am prescribing a solution that worked really well in this little corner of the world - for you guys who were faced with a much more complex and difficult situation.
Only you who are living up north (hemisphere) can make the judgements for up there.
I guess i am just being a bit of a missionary for the approach that Oz, NZ and many of the Pacific nations did.
Sorry if i sound like i am crowing a bit - it's just that what we pulled off was a kind of small miracle. Hard not to be enthusiastic for this approach.

And the numbers are starting to show our economies are going to survive much better too - because the strategy was so successful.
But yeah, if i was living in UK, Europe or USA after the virus was already out of control, I would probably have a different outlook for sure.
