Cambodian Naval Officer Sought for Koh Rong Shooting Incident
Sihanoukville Chief of Police
Cambodia News, Sihanoukville: On May 21, 2020, the Sihanoukville police chief, Choun Narun, reported that arrests were made after a gun was fired during an argument between groups of Chinese and Cambodian men on a tourist boat off Koh Rong Island. Sources say that all the men had been drinking.
Police arrested 31 people in connection with the incident, and 16 Chinese and 2 Cambodians were sent to court, while the others were released. Three Cambodians, believed to be responsible for the gun shots, escaped the scene.
After questioning the suspects, on 28 May, the judge in charge of the case before the Sihanoukville provincial court, ordered the detention of a Cambodian senior naval officer, Lieutenant Colonel Has Sothea.
The officer and two of his men have been identified as the three men who escaped after firing a weapon during the incident on the boat with the Chinese nationals a week earlier.
Meanwhile, the 16 Chinese tourists have complained to the court about being held in prison, while the Cambodians who fired the gun are still free, and the others are out on bail. They also complained about the terrible conditions in the local jail.
