Following the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Outbreak - News and Discussion
Re: Following the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Outbreak - News and Discussion
Preliminary tests for antibodies show low SARS-Cov 2 antibody levels in Sweden along the lines of other similar test results in other nations. Recall that we all still get colds and we all still get the flu, less so the latter due to seasonal shots.

Headline: Swedish antibody study shows long road to immunity as COVID-19 toll mounts
STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - A Swedish study found that just 7.3 percent of Stockholmers developed COVID-19 antibodies by late April, which could fuel concern that a decision not to lock down Sweden against the pandemic may bring little herd immunity in the near future.
The World Health Organization has warned against pinning hopes on herd immunity. It said last week global studies had found antibodies in only 1-10 percent of the population, results in line with recent findings in Spain and France.

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Sweden, which has opted for a more open strategy in combating the virus than other European countries, has the highest number of deaths in Europe per capita from the COVID-19 disease over the last seven days, data showed.
Over the course of the pandemic Sweden still has fewer deaths per capita than the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Belgium and France, which have all opted for lockdowns, but much higher than Nordic neighbours Denmark, Norway and Finland.
???
Most..., like United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Belgium and France. And their economy hasn't been trashed, (and that's ongoing) and they haven't got a population too frightened to emerge from their homes until they are "safe".

Well that poses the question that if Sweden, with no lockdown, still only has a population with under 10% of the population having been infected, just how contagious is this virus?ExPenhMan wrote: ↑Thu May 21, 2020 1:28 pm Preliminary tests for antibodies show low SARS-Cov 2 antibody levels in Sweden along the lines of other similar test results in other nations. Re: Following the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Outbreak - News and Discussion
there are a couple of articles around showing that many swedes practiced 'voluntary lock down'
phone location data shows vastly reduced travel, etc, long before any mandatory restrictions
they could do this because of a decent work culture, and a civic mindset
absent in the us, and increasingly the uk

Your civic duty is not in asking questions as some of those pesky tin-foil hatters do.

Then that is a gift for the pro-lockdowners justifying their side of the argument.Phnom Poon wrote: ↑Thu May 21, 2020 6:58 pm there are a couple of articles around showing that many swedes practiced 'voluntary lock down'

Meanwhile in the USA, for some people, politics is taking precedence over health and safety.
No masks allowed: stores turn customers away in US culture war
Shops around the US make headlines for denying entry to those wearing masks as protesters argue against preventative measures in the name of freedom

In the last few weeks a spate of American stores have made headlines after putting up signs telling customers who wear masks they will be denied entry. On Thursday, Vice reported on a Kentucky convenience store that put up a sign reading: “NO Face Masks allowed in store. Lower your mask or go somewhere else. Stop listening to [Kentucky governor Andy] Beshear, he’s a dumbass.”
Another sign was posted by a Californian construction store earlier this month encouraging hugs but not masks. In Illinois, a gas station employee who put up a similar sign has since defended herself, arguing that mask-wearing made it hard to differentiate between adults and children when selling booze and cigarettes. [She was fired.]
Meanwhile, Donald Trump finally caved and wore a face mask yesterday – something he didn’t want to “give the press the pleasure of seeing”. But while it is gratifying to see the emperor finally forced to wear clothes, you’ve got to wonder to what extent the virus will spread thanks to the actions of citizens insisting on protecting their “freedom” over the right of others not to get sick.
Anti-lockdown protesters have argued that it is anti-American for the government to curtail people’s freedoms in order to reduce deaths as a result of Covid-19. Meanwhile, store owners tell customers what they can and cannot wear before entering, and customers cough in the faces of workers in the name of freedom.

Tried to find a non-Brit news source but was stuck with Daily Mail. Anyway, the gist of it is there.
Headline: Lockdowns failed to alter the course of pandemic and are now destroying millions of livelihoods worldwide, JP Morgan study claims
Headline: Lockdowns failed to alter the course of pandemic and are now destroying millions of livelihoods worldwide, JP Morgan study claims
The JP Morgan report includes graphs showing that 'the vast majority of countries had decreased infection rates' after lockdowns were lifted.
Infection rates have continued to decline even once a lag period for new infections to become visible is factored in, the report says.
A second graph shows a similar effect in the US, showing that many states saw a lower rate of transmission (R) after full-scale lockdowns were ended.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... laims.htmlThe R rate shows how many people each virus patient typically infects, and some countries regard a rate below 1.0 as a key indicator that the epidemic is in retreat.
'While we often hear that lockdowns are driven by scientific models, and that there is an exact relationship between the level of economic activity and the spread of [the] virus - this is not supported by the data,' the report says.
'Indeed, virtually everywhere infection rates have declined after re-opening even after allowing for an appropriate measurement lag.
