UPDATE: Ghanian sentence appeal denied.
February 3, 2023
Supreme Court upholds 30-year sentence for drug smuggling foreigner
A Ghanaian convict saw his appeal quashed after the Supreme Court upheld his 30-year sentence for possessing and trafficking two kilograms of methamphetamine in Phnom Penh in 2017.
Presiding Judge Kong Srim identified the Ghanian as Alhassan Safianh also known as Innocent, 37, a tourist from Ghana.
He said that Alhassan was sentenced on July 25, 2018 by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court to 30 years in prison and a fine of 40 million Riels (about $ 10,000).
He was charged with “drug possession and trafficking” under Article 40 of the Cambodian Law on Drugs Control.
Judge Srim said the convict had previously appealed to the Phnom Penh Court of Appeal but his conviction was upheld in 2020.
