Which countries avoided significant HIV infection, and what policies did they implement to prevent its spread ?SternAAlbifrons wrote: ↑Fri May 15, 2020 3:11 amIt is a similar story in some ways. AIDS and Covid-19.
Some countries acted really quickly and let the medical experts lead. They had phenomenal success in preventing the spread.
Some countries dithered, and bought ideological/political considerations into play. (mostly conservative/right-wing). They bore the whirlwind.
(if you can answer that convincingly I will put on a cap and take it off to you)

Once again, eg OZ - Not avoiding significant transmission - but avoiding significant further infection as soon as the nature of the beast was understood.Foreigner wrote: ↑Fri May 15, 2020 3:33 amWhich countries avoided significant HIV infection, and what policies did they implement to prevent its spread ?SternAAlbifrons wrote: ↑Fri May 15, 2020 3:11 amIt is a similar story in some ways. Then quickly stomping further spread by engaging with the at-risk groups to change risky behaviour,
And introducing excellent support and treatment so lives were not wrecked nearly as much.
Major significant prevention in two of the main high-risk groups, ie IV drug users and sex workers. Only 1-2% infection in these groups compared with other similar situations where 50%+infections took off.

(disclaimer, i am not aussie, so this is not blind patiotism - but i did work in Sydney with the "Worlds Most Successful HIV/AIDS Prevention Program" - with IV drug users and sex workers in the terrible terrible '80's when we were all flying half blind)

Question? Not only you SternAAlbifrons, members. How long if you had unfortunately contracted HIV would the possibility of being then the secondary opportunistic infection such has cancer, that are a result of the progressive failure of the immune system and would cause death, but how long would the term be? Why I say this is because it is a case of reasonable long time, and older the generation indulging in sex will not care about responsibilities, such as using a condom, result of their action is just making it a ongoing problem.SternAAlbifrons wrote: ↑Fri May 15, 2020 3:48 amhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HIV/AIDS_in_AustraliaForeigner wrote: ↑Fri May 15, 2020 3:33 amWhich countries avoided significant HIV infection, and what policies did they implement to prevent its spread ?SternAAlbifrons wrote: ↑Fri May 15, 2020 3:11 amIt is a similar story in some ways. Good Q, Andy.
Progression from HIV infection to AIDS is usually 5-10 years. Short enough for any age group to take seriously, i reckon.
(unlike eg, Hep C where first infection to major liver disease is usually a number of decades)
The main factor these days in some people being lackadaisical, is that it is no longer an automatic death sentence.
Treatment is pretty effective, most people having a relatively good quality of life, and nearly normal life expectancy.
(still a bitch tho' - immune repressing drugs)

Well you halved the time of what an older gentleman was telling me once in his conversation of what he believed, also it was of no concern to himself, although being past the 70 mark and still very sexual active 10 years may have not concerned him. My concern and part of the conversation was that he could catch the HIV virus and pass it on, his answer was well, put on a condom.SternAAlbifrons wrote: ↑Fri May 15, 2020 4:26 am Good Q, Andy.

HIV is thought to have arrived in the west in big numbers around 1980, maybe i or 2 years earlier.
By the mid '80's people were dropping like Cv cases in NYC today.

"Generally speaking, the time it takes to go from HIV infection to AIDS is around 5-10 years if no medical intervention is made. Differences in time can be due to any number of factors, including: The genetic strain of HIV a person has been infected with (some of which may be more or less virulent than others)"

thats good but but dont think they are free for me and even if they are I have to do a trip somewhere to do it and then wait for results. theres no reason they cant be sold like pregnancy tests and tests for some other sexual diseases are.John Bingham wrote: ↑Thu May 14, 2020 7:47 pmThe tests are free and the infection rates in Cambodia are a fraction of what they were in the early 90s. Cambodia has had phenomenal success in reducing HIV infections and should get kudos for that.

Not at all. Nobody prevented the spread of covid, they cannot. It’s just some countries have higher obesity levels, more related chronic diseases and unhealthy lifestyles AND do much more testing than the other countries because they can afford it - is where we see the difference in numbers.SternAAlbifrons wrote: ↑Fri May 15, 2020 3:11 amIt is a similar story in some ways. Countries that keep sitting it out in lockdowns are delaying the spread into summer months when they finally let people go outside. They will have more deaths due to people developing health issues from months of staying home: obesity, heart problems, you name it.
Nobody ever was able to stop flu, it comes back every year. Nobody will stop covid, because it is of the same respiratory nature. They will finally give up but not before they have wrecked economies.

so far, smoking has been associated with reduced risk of coron infection/ deaths
now, vitamin B, commonly found in beer, is also associated
plz god let them link sex with reduced rate of infections
let the parties begin!
