Siem Reap- The future project of a new international airport in Siem Reap will be built on over 700 hectares of land with an investment of approximately $ 900 million invested by YUNAN Development Group, a Chinese-based giant.
Over the last five years, the growth of air travel in Cambodia has steadily increased. In fact, in 2017, Cambodia's three airports received 8 million passengers, compared to 7 million in 2016. By 2018, Cambodia is preparing to welcome 10 million air passengers.

Spokesman Sin Chansavutha said by phone on December 3 that the Siem Reap airport construction project is progressing slowly, but not as fast as they would like, because it could take 5 to 10 years.
According to his information, the development company has had the land cleared and now a lot of ground tests and technical work are underway to get the ground ready for construction. "Technical work is a tough job that can take another year to complete, he said. It takes a lot of time. "

Shanxi wins bid to build sections of new Siem Reap airport
Asia News Network | Publication date 11 July 2019

Shanxi Mechanization Construction Group recently won the bid to build two sections of the new Siem Reap Angkor International Airport project in Cambodia for 290 million yuan ($42.16 million).

The existing Angkor International Airport in Siem Reap, 5km from the famous ancient temple complex and world tourism site Angkor Wat, has only one runway.

Officials have said the vibrations caused by the take-offs and landings of aircraft may damage the foundation of Angkor Wat and the current volume of air traffic cannot meet the rapid development of the local tourism industry.

The new Siem Reap Angkor International Airport – set to be the largest one in Cambodia – will be located 51km southeast of downtown Siem Reap and 40km from Angkor Archaeological Park.

It will cover an area of around 700ha and cost $880 million to construct.

The update was shared by H.E. Sin Chanserey Vutha, spokesman for the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, continuing that the completion of the construction will follow the set schedule.

Located in Soth Nikum district on the land surface of 700 hectares, the new airport constructed by Yunnan Investment Holdings Ltd is estimated to cost about US$900 million.

H.E. Sin Chanserey Vutha is optimistic that the new airport will contribute to promote more tourists visiting not only Siem Reap but other places of Cambodia.

maybe i am long in the tooth and have lost sight of the long term...
But, what I see every day here in Siem Reap is over building...too many hotels..too many restaurants..too many shops...
I just used my 7 day pass in 28 days and retraced my paths from 2017 and found many new places around the complex...I love it...my apartment is only ten minutes away ...
But, I was in F and B for over 30 years and travelled a lot in my life.
I just don't see people coming here more than once.
I understand going back to a favorite beach in Thailand or many other places I have vacationed or lived..
I just don't think Siem Reap offers a repeat customer experience...
Take a tuktuk from the existing airport and you pass these beautiful hotels...along National road 6..
The new airport is going to attract brand new hotels and these existing properties are fucked.
I take my wife down to swim at a lovely hotel near our place..we pay $10 each and it is given back in credit in f and b.....across the street is a brand new hotel not quite open...
all around I see failed businesses...new businesses..empty businesses..
I see they are building an aquarium...yikes..
My landlord has lost his ass with investments and we are his only tenants..he is trying on Facebook to rent out the apartment next door for the coming holidays...
I love Siem Reap ...I love Angkor Wat complex and have gone 10 times in 2 years plus Kulin Mountain.
I just don't think there are a lot of people like me who will come back after visiting once.
I noticed the chinese buses often hardly spend any time at the temples... just quick look sees...
I think the new airport is going to make a few people who are already rich even richer and a whole lot of people who are already deeply invested a lot poorer.
Who is going to ride from the new airport over to a luxury hotel by the old airport?

It has been announced that there is to be a new Siem Reap city to go with the new Siem Reap Airport.

September 18, 2019
New city to be built in Siem Reap province
A new urban centre will be built in Siem Reap, with the project having recently been included in the province’s tourism master plan.

The project was proposed by Tourism Minister Thong Khon on Monday as a concept note during a meeting of an inter-ministerial committee.

This concept note has already been included in the master plan for the province, which is now being drafted and will be ready early next year.

According to Minister Khon, the new city will attract tourists to the province, which has seen a drop in tourism activity, with its landmark destination, the Angkor Archeological Complex, welcoming less international visitors during the first half of the year than during the same period in 2018.

The new city will be located 60 kilometres east of Siem Reap city, according to Mr Khon.

“To welcome more foreign tourists in the future, we will conduct a study on building a new city in Siem Reap,” said Mr Khon, adding that the proposed city will have its own international airport.

Chuk Chumno, director of the department of tourism product development, told Khmer Times yesterday that the project will help diversify the province’s tourism offer.

“The new city will be an additional tourism spot in the city, helping us diversify beyond Angkor Wat,” he said.

“The minister drafted the concept note, and technical experts working on Siem Reap’s tourism master plan will include it in the master plan.”

The master plan will be finished early next year, Mr Chumno noted

China continues to top the list of tourists by nationality in Siem Reap, with about 540,000 Chinese visiting the province in the first half of the year. China is followed by Korea and the US.

:chin: Does anyone wonder if this new Siem Reap will be granted licenses to build casinos which are forbidden in the old Siem Reap ? (Because too close to Angkor Wat apparently.)

New city to boost Siem Reap’s real estate sector: experts
The development of a new city in Siem Reap will bolster the province’s real estate sector and help it become a major investment destination, industry insiders said.

Sorn Seap, founder and CEO of Key Real Estate, told Khmer Times yesterday that it is still early to predict the impact that the development of a new city in Siem Reap could have but surmised that it is sure to attract more investors to the area.

“If the new city is developed with a proper master plan, I believe that many people will want to invest in the province, particularly in the areas surrounding the new development,” he said.

Last week, Tourism Minister Thong Khon announced plans to build a new city in Siem Reap province, home to the Kingdom’s top tourist destination, Angkor Archaeological Park. The new development will be located about 60 kilometres east of Siem Reap city, the minister said.

According to the minister, the new city has already been included in the province’s tourism master plan, which is now being drafted and could be finished as early as next year.

Mr Khon said the new city will be an ambitious project that will help diversify the province’s tourism offer beyond the world-famous Angkor Wat temple.

Kinkesa Kim, manager at CBRE Cambodia, said that, if plans for the new city go ahead, it will drive up land prices in surrounding areas.

“If the new city is developed as planned, it will create a two-tier Siem Reap. One will be the cultural Siem Reap, where the preservation of culture is emphasised. The other Siem Reap will be a more modern city,” she said.

“In Siem Reap city the development of high-rise buildings is not allowed as it would hurt the city’s cultural heritage. This is why opportunities for commercial developments in Siem Reap town are quite limited,” he said.

Siem Reap developers looking east, experts say
Siem Reap is now expanding east, with land prices in the eastern part of the city rising as the government plans a new city in the area, real estate experts said during a workshop yesterday.

Speaking at a forum on the future of Siem Reap held at Raintree Phnom Penh yesterday, James Hodge, CBRE Cambodia director, said real estate developers in the city are looking east, where, due to the distance from Angkor Archaeological Park, restrictions on high-rise developments do not apply.

“We are seeing some levels of decentralisation, most spreading outward. Particularly we can see movement towards the east of Siem Reap along the national road as well as the new 60-metre road. These locations appear to be where the city is heading,” Mr Hodge said.

He pointed out that the eastern side of the city is attracting huge construction projects, and presents notable advantages over other parts of the city. While the north and the west areas have regulation to protect temples and other religious sites, and southern areas are prone to flooding due to its proximity to the Tonle Sap Lake, the east has plenty of land for construction, he said.

It is also well connected to the city centre by several roads, including a ring road.

Other strengths of this side of the city are that it already has a good network of roads, it is close to the existing international airport, and the land is cheaper, Mr Hodge said.

Developments on the way in the city include a new urban centre complete with new international airport, ring road renovations, a 70-hectare solar power station, a floating market and resort complexes.

The east of the city is already home to the Song Saa Reserve and a community-based development in Bakong Village and will soon welcome the Angkor Wildlife and Aquarium, he noted.

“The new city is quite a separate location. It is 60 kilometres away from the existing city. If it does happen, it will certainly increase the land value considerably,” he said.

$880m Siem Reap International Airport to be ready in 3 years
The new $880 million Siem Reap International Airport project that begun construction in March will take three years to complete, according to the ‘building company Angkor International Airport Investment.

The new airport – set to be the largest in Cambodia – will be located 51km South-East of downtown Siem Reap and 40km from Angkor Archaeological Park and will cover an area of around 700 hectares.

In a meeting this week with Mao Havannall, State Secretariat of Civil Aviation and Lu Wei, the director of Angkor International Airport Investment (AIAI). it was announced that the construction of the new airport began on March 15 this year and will take 36 months to complete.

“Our company is working closely with the Cambodia Civil Aviation’s technical team, focusing on installing the airport’s technical facility and design,” Lu Wei said.

Mao Havannall also expressed strong support for the project and urged the company to finish construction by the scheduled date, while praising the good relationship between both Cambodia and China as a result of the investment.

Angkor International Airport Investment (Cambodia) Co Ltd operates under the Chinese state-run Yunnan Investment Holdings Ltd (YIHL) after the company signed a 55-year concession with the Cambodian government for the new airport in 2017.

In addition, the Chinese-based construction company Shanxi Mechanisation Construction Group won the bid last year to build two sections of the new airport for $42.16 million.

The company will be responsible for the construction of the flight area and the auxiliary facilities that include the terminal, foundations, earthworks, slopes, the runway and drainage engineering.

Once the first phase of the new airport is completed, the airport is expected to receive 7 million passengers annually, greatly facilitating aviation and the tourism development of Siem Reap province and boost the economy of Cambodia for which tourism is a pillar industry, the construction firm said.

The airport will be the company’s first overseas airport project and is considered part of the Belt and Road Initiative for the group to expand into overseas markets.
