Italy's government announced on Wednesday that it is closing all schools and universities nationwide as the number of confirmed infections of the new coronavirus in the country have topped 3,000.

The announcement comes after cases of the new coronavirus in Italy jumped by 587 to 3,089, and 28 more people have died bringing the death toll to 107.

Flybe has been in trouble for ages. Bailed out by the government 2 months ago.

I'm sure corona didn't help but it was always only a matter of time.

Coronavirus scrutiny is invading citizens' privacy ...

'More scary than coronavirus': South Korea's health alerts expose private lives
‘Safety guidance texts’ sent by the authorities contain an avalanche of personal information and are fuelling social stigma
Nemo Kim in Seoul

Fri 6 Mar 2020 04.46 GMT
As the number of coronavirus cases in South Korea exceeded 6,000 this week, there was a rise, too, in complaints about information overload in the form of emergency virus text alerts that have included embarrassing revelations about infected people’s private lives.

Health authorities and district offices across the country are sending “safety guidance texts” from early morning to late at night, reminding people to wash their hands thoroughly and not to touch their faces with unwashed hands.

But for many people, the texts – while intended as a public health service – are fuelling social stigma and in some cases, leading to speculation over extra-marital affairs.

Much of the criticism centres on messages that trace the movements of people who have recently been diagnosed with the virus.

“A woman in her 60s has just tested positive,” reads a typical text, “Click on the link for the places she visited before she was hospitalised,” it adds. Clicking on the link takes the user to the website of a district office that lists the places the patient had visited before testing positive.

This avalanche of information has included some embarrassing revelations.

One involved a man in his 50s who returned from Wuhan province in China – where the outbreak started – with his 30-year-old secretary. Both were infected in the early days of the epidemic.

In another case, reported by the BBC, one alert said a man contracted the virus from an instructor during a sexual harassment class.

As South Korean media pored over their movements, citizens looked on with a mixture of horror and fascination as their private lives were laid bare, leading to speculation that they were having an affair and that the secretary had undergone plastic surgery.

Coronavirus: UN warns of global food crisis
News24
02 Apr 2020, 05:42 GMT+10

The heads of three global agencies warned Wednesday of a potential worldwide food shortage if authorities fail to manage the ongoing coronavirus crisis properly.

Many governments around the world have put their populations on lockdown to slow the spread of the virus but that has resulted in severe slow-downs in international trade and food supply chains.

Meanwhile panic buying by people going into isolation has already demonstrated the fragility of supply chains as supermarket shelves emptied in many countries.

"Uncertainty about food availability can spark a wave of export restrictions, creating a shortage on the global market," said the joint text signed by Qu Dongyu, head of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO) and Roberto Azevedo, director of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

That is not an idle threat. After the 2007 global financial crisis, rice producing countries India and Vietnam restricted exports to ward off expected price increases. The result: food riots in several developing countries as the price of rice soared.

The warning could be directed at Russia as officials there have mulled restricting wheat exports and have already tapped the nation's reserves to ensure prices don't jump.

"In the midst of the Covid-19 lockdowns, every effort must be made to ensure that trade flows as freely as possible, specially to avoid food shortage(s)" from developing, the joint statement said.

"When acting to protect the health and well-being of their citizens, countries should ensure that any trade-related measures do not disrupt the food supply chain," it added.

Over the longer term, confinement orders and travel restrictions risk causing disruptions in agricultural production due to the unavailability of agricultural labour and the inability to get food to markets.

"Such disruptions including hampering the movement of agricultural and food industry workers and extending border delays for food containers, result in the spoilage of perishables and increasing food waste," the three leaders noted.

Closing borders has exposed just how much certain countries are dependant upon foreign workers to bring in crops.

Brilliant. More money for local councils to repaint every street with lines and pictures and order 100,000 million signposts, all being completed and installed over the next 2 years just in time for the official end of the panic.
