Lovesick Wild Elephant Moons After Lady Village Elephant
April 27, 2020, 2:21 PM
Cambodia News, Mondulkiri: It's been reported that a handsome young male elephant has been falling in love with a domestic elephant for five days now, and on 27 April, he was still at the scene, despite being chased by villagers.
Khun Dion, president of the Elephant Conservation Association in Mondulkiri informed Rasmei Kampuchea today that the lovestruck wild elephant is hanging around his girlfriend, who is a domestic elephant from the village, and he looks determined to stay. Despite villagers' best efforts, the two lovebirds went off into the bushes together for some alone time. However, the female later returned to the village of her own accord.
That sounds all very romantic, but the villagers are afraid of the male wild elephant who is obviously very keen on his new girlfriend, and local conservation agents are keeping a strict eye on the elephant's activities, as it is feared that he may go into the villagers' fields and eat their crops, or cause damage because he is frustrated. Villagers remain armed and on the lookout.

Romeo and Juliet (continued)
3 May 2020: An UPDATE for those of you who are wondering what happened to Romeo and Juliet, the elephant couple who are separated by their birth and background, (Romeo is from a wild Mondulkiri elephant herd, while Juliet has been brought up as a village elephant), the news from Pou Trum Thmey village in Mondulkiri, is that Romeo is still hanging around the village to catch a glimpse of his beloved.
Elephant Romeo pines for his Juliet
The villagers are getting fed up with this wild male elephant that refuses to leave the area and go back to his herd. He is being monitored by conservation officials, but they say they can't do anything and that the elephant should leave of his own accord eventually.
Meanwhile Romeo pines, and Juliet sighs, but it seems that their forbidden love was doomed from the start.
[This is the illustration of a classic Cambodian love story, and would make a popular movie or KTV video clip if the male elephant finally reveals himself to be a prince in disguise. ]
