I've never understood why "will of the people" and "democracy" were considered such great ideas. The guy who can't even get an order right while working the register at McDonalds... that's your majority. An easily manipulated group given the low levels of intelligence and/or education. What magic formula makes anyone think that a collective of those people will suddenly register the mental ability to choose an appropriate individual for governing a country? It's like saying the janitors would be best for choosing the CEO of a Fortune 500 company.

Though as I'm sitting here watching videos of the army shooting protesters in the street I have to wonder how this is a representation of 'the will of the people' or how it can be considered bloodless...

Too true, "The will of the people" most definately not & bloodless only if the people agree with us.OrangeDragon wrote:Though as I'm sitting here watching videos of the army shooting protesters in the street I have to wonder how this is a representation of 'the will of the people' or how it can be considered bloodless...
Yes sir, I can boogie, I can boogie, boogie, boogie all night long.

Unfortunately that's a very good point. When I sometimes see what members of democratic societies have to say whenever "ordinary people" are given a voice on TV, it often boggles the mind. Not because I don't agree with their opinion, that I could live with, but because of the complete lack of intelligence put on display.OrangeDragon wrote:I've never understood why "will of the people" and "democracy" were considered such great ideas. On the bright side, most democracies dumb the process of selecting the leaders down sufficiently for the masses to vote on. The election of the POTUS is a prime example. With all the arm twisting, backroom dealing, electioneering and lobbying that takes place before the populace at large finally gets the say which one of two carefully preselected guys is to become president, the damage they can do is somewhat limited.

then there's the electoral college protecting us from idiocy even further.
really it seems the ideal would be academic leaders in relevant fields (poli sci, econ, foreign relations, law, medicine, etc) creating an electoral cabinet which then selected from candidates, in a sort of round table setting, those best suited for actually performing these tasks.

^ and therein is the great lie. America (Australia, etc.) is not a democracy at all, by definition. Do you want the red pill, or the blue pill, Neo?

pretty sure america has always called itself a representative republic rather than a democracy. not much of a lie in that. they select the representatives via a democratic process, but that does not make one a democracy. in fact... pretty sure there are no true democracies in the world as actual national governments go.

Pretty sure you're right.
And yet what is the political model we of the west advocate as being best for every other nation?

Re: Should i send this to John Kerry
only as a buzz word. we still mean representative republics. elected leaders, elected lawmakers, etc.
in a true democracy the people literally vote on every law/decision...
