Well, sometimes you see something you really didn't want to see, tonight was one of those times.

A bit earlier just near FCC I saw a small crowd of people tightly grouped together and wondered what they were looking at. As I was taller than pretty well everyone else I had a quick look over their shoulders and could see one old lady and a few kids. Big deal I thought and did my usual walk thing.

If you were looking for a girlfriend or an updated model now would really be the time - wow! Way better that watching crap on TV... Even your red-headed, befreckled cousin could hook up.

Got back near FCC and there was still a crowd in the same spot so I thought I'd better have a closer look this time. On the first look I missed seeing a small, rakey looking kid much smaller in stature than my 3.5 yr son. Only thing was that he had a tiny head. Proportionally, it was like looking at one of the monkeys that come around my balcony from time to time stealing the fruit that people leave out for some dead dude who never eats anything. I was a bit shocked to be honest, the poor kid's head was roughly half the size of a regular kid. To top it off, he was loping around within the confines of the audience and you could see the begging bowl next to the woman.

So my take was that family have bought the kid here as a kind of freak show money generating thing.

As I said before, I wish I hadn't looked.

Just wondering if the bearded lady and the elephant man will show up next, or if there will be a hermaphrodite peep show in a tent? Anyone?

Yes. But surely you must have seen this kind of thing before in Phnom Penh. It was common fare at the entrance of Central Market, and various places along the riverside.

I've seen a few deformed adults around the place and lots of stunted kids but never seen anything quite like this kid before. I rarely go to Central Market so that may explain it a little but I regularly move around the riverside area.

I felt like an utter bastard the other day - gave this kid some small money as an excuse to say hi, I was eating some sugar cane and gave him/her (anybody know?) a piece, all smiles. When I walked back past later the kid was holding it and looking confused, had taken a bite but clearly didn't know what to do with it.

I know, first-world guilt, but it upset me more than it should.
