Re: A Very Sad Expat Story in Kampot
Whilst it is a sad story, I have little to no sympathy for for him. Not only did he fail to conduct due diligence before purchasing land, which if he had he would have known that foreigners cannot legally own land and he could have taken steps to protect his interest ie. long term lease, set up and purchase through a company...instead he trusted a real estate agent to purchase the land under his (the real estate agents) name, and it also appears that he failed to conduct any due diligence on building regulations as he has built a permanent structure within 30m of the riverbank, which he could be forced to demolish if the state deems. Nice looking house though, the guy obviously had money - but no common sense.

UPDATE
That was fast work. The latest update on the case says that Tom O'Brien's Khmer 'brother' (the Kampot real estate agent) has admitted that he made a mistake, and now he is willing to return the disputed land to the Alaskan man, and he apologizes for his fault.
HAPPY END.
Tom thanks everyone:
Tom has been extremely appreciative and grateful to Samdech Prime Minister for giving him justice and he will always remember the goodness of Cambodia.
Thank you to all the authorities for their help in this matter and thank all our dear brothers and sisters for their sympathy. Wishing you all the best and good luck.

Good on him, though not sure how he can own land or have I missed something?
I'm standing up, so I must be straight.
