Help Wanted: Prototyping a cheap ebike for the people
Re: Help Wanted: Prototyping a cheap ebike for the people
As an old Australian friend of mine once said .. "That's not a bike .... now THAT's a bike..."
[It has a digital speedometer, so I think it qualifies as an eBike]

still much cheaper than buying gasoline , oil changes, & tuneups
just gasoline cost:
moto @ 50 km/$1 liter = 80 Riel/km
ebike = @200w/km = 12 Riel/km

Old harleys are slow and will leak oil where ever they go
The new eHarleys do 0-60 in under 4 sec and no oil leaks

You're absolutely right, but:
1. A Harley is to be looked at, not raced by Valentino Rossi.
2. The Livewire looks like any other sport bike.
Give me good looks & oil any day. // Checks we're still on the bike topic! //

Except in exceptional circumstances, such as when you have a very hard, non deformable wheel and very flat rolling surface, such as you might find with a steel wheel on a train track, the weight of a typical solar panel actually creates more rolling drag than the energy it can produce. So the idea of using cheap, polycrystalline cells to do this on deformable rubber wheels on asphalt is a net loss. Don't even think about it on dirt.Duncan wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2020 10:36 am I'm looking forward to the day when cyclo's have '' electro assisted '' peddle power, with a solar panel and battery. It must be bloody hard for some of those old village guys to get that extra boost of speed that is needed sometimes, especially when there is a big fat mama with all her groceries riding in it.
There may be some very exotic and expensive monocrystalline cells that could make this viable, but you are looking at serious $$$. There are also some new organic polymer cells that might have a chance, but they are still in the lab and likely a decade away from commercialization. A lightweight, high density battery and fixed location rapid charging stations is the only practical idea at the moment.

They need to put some kind of noise into those things, they are dangerous because they go so fast silently. If there's anything worse than some idiot driving fast on a moto with no lights it's an idiot on an e-scooter roving around trying to kill pedestrians etc.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

I was watching them offload pigs from a truck to the slaughterhouse the other day. They just had a piece of PVC pipe with household electrical wire running through it. They plugged one end into the wall and then starting poking the pigs. Boy did those pigs move off that truck. Straight to their doom.
Makes you think though. I think that the Khmer version of an "e-bike" is just a tandem bike with an electric cattle prod so you could poke the driver to go faster....
