Despite coronavirus outbreaks, cruise ship bookings are up for 2021

They're probably advertised as 'a real adventure'. :stir:

Many people don’t believe in this bogeyman du jour and for good reasons. As soon as borders are opened and cruise ships, air planes start going, they intend to resume lives. The only thing preventing them now is restrictions to travel.

No way. You underestimate the way masses think. I flew more than half empty planes in February and March already. No restriction in place back then. Tickets at rock bottom prices those months.
It's not just the restrictions. Once they're lifted, the economy isn't blossoming overnight.

I agree that many will not be able to afford what they could afford before, sure enough travel traffic will take years to get back to 2019 levels.

How about no MONEY
Millions and millions out of work, lost their jobs, lost their small business, went into debt?

Normal tourism, ( suitcase travelers) will take a min of 18 months to recover.
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

This struck me. Australia's tourism minister is openly talking about keeping it's borders closed until the end of the year or even beyond. They know it will wipe out the international tourism industry worth AU$4 billion a month. But that's the price and Australia has come to terms with that. AU$48 billion actually seems cheap in the grand scheme of things.

I've always admired the Australian governments not-fucking-around-here attitude, even if it upsets others. This seems to be another example, although no one can have any issues with this decision.

I wonder how many other countries, especially the ones who get this thing under control quickly and without too much economic damage, will risk opening their borders when they can see the carnage in countries that failed to do so.

Could countries just accept that, once they are virus free and until a vaccine is developed and deployed, they will not allow any foreigners in? The cost of international tourism for a year or two is a price they are prepared to pay.

It makes me concerned about getting back to Cambodia anytime soon.

SIA extends most flight suspensions to June 30
Only 10 of carrier's 200 aircraft flying to just 15 cities
25 Apr 2020 at 16:35
AFP
SINGAPORE: Singapore Airlines (SIA) has said it will cancel most of its flights until the end of June. The announcement comes just four days after it said it would extend its near-shutdown until the end of May.

About 96% of scheduled flights will be cancelled, and the airline will fly only to 15 cities in that period, it said in a statement on its website. They include six Southeast Asian cities, Tokyo, London and Los Angeles.

Out of SIA Group’s fleet of approximately 200 aircraft, only about 10 are now in operation to serve a limited passenger network.

I go to India every year, October-Feb I just checked the flights and they are cheap at the moment, £400 return, October to Feb with BA, I usually pay around £550. However i am not sure what India will be like after this. We have no idea of the numbers of people who had or have the virus, no idea of the numbers of deaths, plus there are millions who rely on a daily wage and not much in the way of support. I see a crisis looming in India.

Or maybe the virus did not take hold and spread in India for reasons that are not clear yet ?

Yeah, India is one of those countries that's on my 'worried about' list. Over a billion people looking at the extreme wealth of a few million elite with little or no access to decent medical facilities,

If the virus takes hold there, the numbers of deaths will make the US look mild. I just hope, like Cambodia, that the extreme heat and humidity, a lack of obesity (except the elite) and lots of sunshine might well be a big factor in keeping it at bay. However, it's a big country with different climates and so that may not hold true everywhere.
