Smoking is also detrimental to the immune system and its responsiveness to infections, making smokers more vulnerable to infectious diseases6. Previous studies have shown that smokers are twice more likely than non-smokers to contract influenza and have more severe symptoms, while smokers were also noted to have higher mortality in the previous MERS-CoV outbreak7,8


We identified five studies that reported data on the smoking status of patients infected with COVID-19. Notably, in the largest study that assessed severity, there were higher percentages of current and former smokers among patients that needed ICU support, mechanical ventilation or who had died, and a higher percentage of smokers among the severe cases12. However, from their published data we can calculate that the smokers were 1.4 times more likely (RR=1.4, 95% CI: 0.98–2.00) to have severe symptoms of COVID-19 and approximately 2.4 times more likely to be admitted to an ICU, need mechanical ventilation or die compared to non-smokers (RR=2.4, 95% CI: 1.43–4.04).

In conclusion, although further research is warranted as the weight of the evidence increases, with the limited available data, and although the above results are unadjusted for other factors that may impact disease progression, smoking is most likely associated with the negative progression and adverse outcomes of COVID-19.

I can't see pubs opening on the 7th. All that shoulder to shoulder at the bar ordering drinks - that can't happen for a long while. Maybe table service only or beer gardens only. Maybe with the bar as a walk up at one end, order and pay and get a number, and collect at the other end. Nobody's going to want to get too close to anyone.

What would be the diameter of a round (standing) table, being able to serve 6 people at a time while adhering the 1,5 meter (5 ft?) social distancing rule in every direction?

And how many of those round table would you be able to 'squeeze' in a 10 x 10 meter room while adhering the same rule?

And finally.... How much profit would the establishment make in this siruation?

If keeping 1,5 meter distance will be the new norm indefinitely, then you might as well kill all of mankind.

Whether you like it or not, it will be the norm for a while. How long do think it will the norm? Not asking if you agree, just asking how long you think.

If the virus kills off too many old people Weatherspoons will go skint, but on the other hand Weatherspoon pubs always seems to have loads of old men all sitting alone at tables ?
