Promising 'better days,' Macron extends France's lockdown until May 11

PARIS (Reuters) - French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday announced he was extending a virtual lockdown to curb the coronavirus outbreak until May 11, adding that progress had been made but the battle not yet won.

Following Italy in extending the lockdown but announcing no immediate easing of restrictive measures as in Spain, Macron said the tense situation in hospitals in Paris and eastern France meant there could be no let-up in the country.

Since March 17, France’s 67 million people have been ordered to stay at home except to buy food, go to work, seek medical care or get some exercise on their own. The lockdown was originally scheduled to end on Tuesday.

“I fully understand the effort I’m asking from you,” Macron told the nation in a televised address at the end of the lockdown’s fourth week, adding the current rules were working.

“When will we be able to return to a normal life? I would love to be able to answer you. But to be frank, I have to humbly tell you we don’t have definitive answers,” he said.

Schools and shops would progressively reopen on May 11, Macron said. But restaurants, hotels, cafes and cinemas would have to remain shut longer, he added. International arrivals from non-European countries will remain prohibited until further notice.

How China Deceived the WHO

Back in January, when the pandemic now consuming the world was still gathering force, a Berkeley research scientist named Xiao Qiang was monitoring China’s official statements about a new coronavirus then spreading through Wuhan and noticed something disturbing. Statements made by the World Health Organization, the international body that advises the world on handling health crises, often echoed China’s messages. “Particularly at the beginning, it was shocking when I again and again saw WHO’s [director-general], when he spoke to the press … almost directly quoting what I read on the Chinese government’s statements,” he told me.

In this video Economist Danielle DiMartino makes a nice case why China, the WHO and the US government are all to blame by spreading misinformation and wihholding real info to the public and science communities.

Green is non smokers. I looked at the graph but it doesn't seem to add up:

35-59 years olds? Nobody else is lumping that age group together, so that's a bit odd from the start.

Also, that group shows that of the non smokers:

Deaths 50
ICU Stays 400
Non ICU 550
Total 3800!!

Many of the numbers don't seem to add up.

Also, if green was originally representing smokers then everyone says, "so what". However, if somebody altered the legend to make green represent non smokers instead of smokers you've got a story,

As a non smoker I want this to be fake!! But well worth having a rummage around to see if it is real...

Smokers are more at risk:
