NEW YORK (Reuters) - The United States surpassed Italy on Saturday as the country with the highest reported coronavirus death toll, recording more than 20,000 deaths since the outbreak began, according to a Reuters tally.

The grim milestone was reached as President Donald Trump mulled over when the country, which has registered more than half a million infections, might begin to see a return to normality.

The United States has seen its highest death tolls to date in the epidemic with roughly 2,000 deaths a day reported for the last four days in a row, the largest number in and around New York City. Even that is viewed as understated, as New York is still figuring out how best to include a surge in deaths at home in its official statistics.

Public health experts have warned the U.S. death toll could reach 200,000 over the summer if unprecedented stay-at-home orders that have closed businesses and kept most Americans indoors are lifted when they expire at the end of the month.

Health Minister 'cautious' as NSW records seven new coronavirus cases

NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard has urged people not to get false hope after revealing the lowest number of new COVID-19 cases since March 11, as the death toll in the state increased by one to 24.

Mr Hazzard cautiously revealed on Sunday that there were just seven new cases of COVID-19 in the state. While the results "sound hopeful", he stressed there had only been 833 tests conducted over the Easter weekend, when usually 4000 tests are done each day.

C'mon, every article on coronavirus is not going to discuss China, Wuhan , and Professor Strangelove.

Well since their first sentence says that the US has surpassed Italy for the largest recorded number of deaths from C-19 it is an error of omission when they don’t mention that no one truly knows how many died in China.
But then, we have the WHO parroting Chinese official figures without question so I guess news outlets are just following suit.

Go hard and go early seems to be the key.
BUT (in case you think i am getting cocky)
The Sthn hemisphere is just about to go into winter - the weather in OZ and NZ has been quite mild up until now.
Thank God we went in early with effective measures, we don't have the luxury of a coming Spring and Summer.
Down here, we are in for an endurance test that those in the North will not get.

And no escape back home to Cambodia for some time yet. I think our borders will be sealed for longer than most.

Yeah, but Stern, Australia didn't go in early. The lockdown only started two and a half weeks ago (almost 3 weeks ago now).

Or, maybe Aussies are more inclined to follow the rules (we the sheeple) as compared to other countries.

NZ went in early, and hardest of any nation.
Australia was a little slow off the mark, but they got very serious about it when they did. and still when the cases were low in number.

Not pop density, that i can see. That is a myth about aussies all living out in the bush or on under-populated coasts.
In fact Australia is one of the most urbanised countries there is.
Something like 85% of the pop lives in urban areas. All crammed into the marrow coastal strip and big cities between Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. plus the little island Perth.
Those cities are relatively high densities compared with other cities around the world too.

Everybody adopting the measures, "pulling together" has been a really reassuring thing to see for a jaded old bloke like me. NZ has always had that, but i thought OZ was loosing it fast. But no - when the crunch came, both nations proved to be jam packed with fab attitudes to communal good citizenship.

I reckon the season helped, big time - but that will work against us soon.
Lucky we will be coming off the best base that could be achieved.
