Happy National Reading Day!

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Happy National Reading Day! If you have children among your family and friends, give them books and encourage them to read. This is a given in western families, but many Khmer households don't have books for children to read for fun and learning.
Let's get kids reading for fun.

Should be made into a National Holiday.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Cultivating the reading habit in Cambodia
By Ban Chanphalla
For Cambodia, literacy is believed to be one of the most crucial components for country’s development. However, having the ability to read and write alone is not sufficient for prosperous growth. Cambodians need to adopt reading as a habit. This hobby can lead to self-development and thus help the social and economic growth of the nation to thrive.

The government has acknowledged literacy and reading problems and has initiated social events to raise awareness and draw public attention to reading, such as a National Reading Day and book fairs. The most recent effort was the fourth Cambodian National Reading Day, which concluded in March with around 68,000 participants. Three days of collaborative events between the Ministry of Education Youth and Sport and the National Library of Cambodia aimed at captivating students’ interest in reading.

The idea is great, but it does not effectively address the root cause of Cambodians’ low reading rate.

With heavy emphasis on the importance and benefits of reading, little attention is given to personal behavior – that is, the habit of reading, which some would argue is more effective in improving literacy skills, especially in children. In addition, while boasting one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing economies, Cambodia is desperately in need of human capital to sustain this growth. Reading is one of the key ingredients for human resources to prosper in line with the kingdom’s long-term developments.

It is worth noting the clear distinction between having the ability to read and adopting the habit of reading – indeed, there is a difference between literacy and reading on a daily basis. Whether from textbooks or from novels, readers will learn something new. Children who read as a hobby will find themselves more critical, able to think faster and smarter, compared with those who don’t. The hobby will shape the way they think and make them more creative. It will also provide new information and fresh insights to readers.

The Ministry of Education and Unesco yesterday celebrated International Literacy Day in Siem Reap province’s Siem Reap city and invited anyone who is illiterate to participate in literacy programmes.

Pao Piseth, Siem Reap provincial deputy governor, highlighted the importance of improving literacy, which can be done through various programmes.

“In Siem Reap province, there are 42,422 illiterate people, including 20,977 women aged between 15 and 45,” Mr Piseth said. “We have held literacy classes and have taught 1,552 illiterates so far, including 1,211 women. We have employed 64 teachers, including 36 women.”

Mr Piseth said the classes are open to anyone who cannot read and write.

Over a million English books of almost every genre – fiction, non-fiction, self-help, business, and others – will arrive in Cambodia early next year for the world’s biggest book sale, announced Malaysian home-grown book fair, Big Bad Wolf Books.

In a press release, the book fair said over the past decade, Big Bad Wolf Books had organised some of the largest book sales in the world.

“Book lovers in Phnom Penh will now be able to enjoy an affordable book-hunting experience with 50 to 90 per cent discounts from the recommended retail price at the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale Phnom Penh 2020,” said the press release.

The sale will be open to the public for 12 consecutive days, from 9am to 12am, on January 9-20 at the capital’s Borey Rung Reung Market in Chroy Changvar district.

The Big Bad Wolf Book Sale opened in Phnom Penh yesterday. Open from 9-20 January 2020. Get reading!
Big Bad Wolf Book Sale Phnom Penh 2020 Kicks Off
AKP Phnom Penh, January 09, 2020 —

Big Bad Wolf Book Sale, the world’s biggest travelling book sale, began at Rung Reung Market in Khan Chroy Changvar, Phnom Penh this morning under the presidency of H.E. Khieu Kanharith, Minister of Information.

Lasting from Jan. 9 to 20, the event brings about 1 million high quality English books, including Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Children’s books, for people of all ages and in all fields.

By offering affordable prices (with discount from 50 to 90 percent), the twelve-day event is aimed to build the culture of reading in Cambodia.

Speaking on the occasion, H.E. Khieu Kanharith noted the growing habit of reading among the Cambodian youth, recalling that some 170,000 people visited the 8th Cambodia Book Fair held from Dec. 13 to 15, 2019.

Mr. Ouk Chandara, Spokesperson of the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale Phnom Penh 2020, said this is a pride for Cambodia that such a big book fair is organised in Phnom Penh. This is a good opportunity for the Cambodian people to develop their knowledge and skills through reading, he underlined.

According to its online source, the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale first started in Malaysia in 2009 at Dataran Hamodal, as the brainchild of BookXcess’ founders, Andrew Yap and Jacqueline Ng. More than a Sale, the World’s Biggest Book Sale is a global reading advocacy effort. Since its inception, the Sale has evolved tremendously; going global and touring cities in Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Myanmar, South Korea, the Philippines, and United Arab Emirates.

The Sale has the mission to cultivate reading habits around the world and to build a new generation of readers by making books more affordable and accessible to everyone, said the same source, adding that the low prices encourage customers to take a chance on new authors and genres they might never have tried before.

National Reading Day is on 6 March. Do your bit to encourage children and adolescents to read books : buy some books for families in need, or spend time reading some fun stories to your kids or grandkids.

Preparations are ongoing for the celebration of the National Reading Day on March 6 which aims to promote the joy and value of reading among Cambodian youths, the Ministry of Education said yesterday.

Speaking at the press conference, Education Minister Hang Chuon Naron said the National Reading Day will be celebrated at the Institute of Technology of Cambodia.

The event will see the participation of more than 100 book stores and publishers, as well as workshops which will allow amateur and experienced writers to share their love of literature and the importance of fostering a culture of reading.

The ministry, he said, is also set to launch a reading campaign across provinces from March 6 to 15.

“We call on parents and youth to join the National Reading Day. We need to create a culture of reading among children as early as possible by bringing them to libraries and practicing bedtime reading,” said Mr Naron.

The ministry plans on having quality libraries in all 6,000 schools across the Kingdom.

“All schools already have libraries but not all of them are well equipped. Some do not have enough books related to the students learning level,” he said.

To compliment the establishment of improved libraries, he urged parents to encourage reading among their children outside the school premises.

Maybe after a little more practice cambodian kids could take this marvellous concept to the youth of the west.
To everybody in the west - who have forsaken reading books for the instant shallow pleasures of the screen.

Growing up in Pursat province, Set Hattha, who is well known as “Kon Chab Mease” (the Little Golden Bird) had nothing other than going to the rice field, tending to the livestock and spending the rest of her time in the kitchen. But inside her heart, she always knew she wanted a future of living her life fully and to explore what the outside world may offer her. But to achieve that, it took her blood, sweat and tears. It took her to different paths of life. Walking in the journey of becoming a young author in the kingdom, many people clapped and acknowledged her talent but not many people know her unsung story behind her true success.
Som Kanika caught up with Set Hattha for an exclusive interview.
