Speed of coronavirus deaths shocks doctors as New York toll hits new high
Nick Brown, Gabriella Borter

5 Min Read

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York, the hardest-hit state in America, on Wednesday reported its highest number of coronavirus-related deaths in a single day with even veteran doctors and nurses expressing shock at the speed with which patients were declining and dying.

The number of coronavirus cases in New York state alone approached 150,000 on Wednesday, even as authorities warned the state’s official death tally may understate the true number.

“Every number is a face, “ said New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ordered flags flown at half-staff across New York in recognition of the toll. “This virus attacked the vulnerable and attacked the weak and it’s our job as a society to protect the vulnerable.”

Doctors and nurses say it isn’t just elderly or patients with underlying health conditions who appear to be fine one minute and at death’s door the next. It can happen for the young and healthy, too.

Patients “look fine, feel fine, then you turn around and they’re unresponsive,” said Diana Torres, a nurse at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, the epicenter of the pandemic in the United States, where the virus has infected more than 415,000 people. “I’m paranoid, scared to walk out of their room.”

What will this mean for global travel ?

Lockdowns can't end until Covid-19 vaccine found, study says
China’s restrictions have brought the first wave to an end but the danger of a second is very real
Published on Wed 8 Apr 2020 23.30 BST

Countries wanting to end the lockdown and allow people to move about and work again will have to monitor closely for new infections and adjust the controls they have in place until there is a vaccine against Covid-19, according to a new study based on the Chinese experience.

China’s aggressive controls over daily life have brought the first wave of Covid-19 to an end, say researchers based in Hong Kong. But the danger of a second wave is very real.

“While these control measures appear to have reduced the number of infections to very low levels, without herd immunity against Covid-19, cases could easily resurge as businesses, factory operations, and schools gradually resume and increase social mixing, particularly given the increasing risk of imported cases from overseas as Covid-19 continues to spread globally,” says Prof Joseph T Wu from the University of Hong Kong, who co-led the research.

China has pushed the reproductive number – the number of people on average that one person with Covid-19 will infect – from two or three to below one, where the epidemic is effectively shrinking.

But, the researchers warn, if normal life is allowed to resume too quickly and the lifting of controls is too extensive, the reproductive number will rise again. Governments will need to keep a close watch on what is happening, they say.

“Although control policies such as physical distancing and behavioural change are likely to be maintained for some time, proactively striking a balance between resuming economic activities and keeping the reproductive number below one is likely to be the best strategy until effective vaccines become widely available,” said Wu.

"Israel's health minister, who claims coronavirus is ‘divine punishment’ for homosexuality, tests positive for COVID-19"

And this is what he looks like. What a surprise...

He's a right c**t, who has been holding illegal prayer gatherings and in August the Israel Police recommended that he be criminally indicted for bribery and aiding an alleged pedophile.

read all abut him here...

Thanks for sharing. Definitely provides some more "food for thought" with regards to distancing. Everyone in the US should be required to read it.
...What happened to Spain?
Do you think the parents of baby boomers whined so much when the boomers started changing society? And yet the whiney ones like to call young people "snowflakes." Hmm...

Chinese Cartoon Depicts Rule-Breaking Foreigners As Trash To Be Sorted

While China is no stranger to xenophobia and racism, the COVID-19 pandemic has taken hostility toward foreigners to an alarming new level. Driven by a string of news stories that put foreigners in a negative light for their irresponsible behavior during the outbreak, Chinese social media has been flooded with hateful and sometimes violent comments targeting the expatriate community. Over the weekend, the intolerance reached a fever pitch with a cartoon created by WeChat blog 锦鲤青年 (Koi Youth jǐnlǐ qīngnián), which sorts foreigners who “seek special treatment and run wild” in China into various categories, and depicts them as trash to be disposed of..."

Should be compulsory reading for Brits and Mericans. The Ozzie stats are a good example of what can be achieved (if everyone pulls together).

China WILL come out on top and make good use of the situation for themselves.
changed that for ya :beer3:
aaahhhh another long range plan from China.
We don't know how hard China has been hit, and the current numbers in Europe and the USA make clear the numbers in China have been a joke. They can be multiplied by 10, or even more, easily. They closed Wuhan down when about 600 people were infected according to the statistics. Again, a joke.

China is going to be hit hard by this as well. They might recover sooner than the rest of the rest of the world in terms of production, but their supply chains have been interrupted as well. They have banks on the brinks of collapsing as well. But most important, who is going to buy all those products? Cambodia? Both the US and Europe have other things on their mind than buying stuff from China, people can hardly go out to spend their money. And if they will gradually be allowed out in weeks or months it will be interesting what the general feeling of the population is about all this.

Interesting times ahead.
