Virak Buntham Bus Overturns, Driver Runs, Eleven Injured
Cambodia News (Mondulkiri): On April 5, 2020, at 04:15 am, a bus belonging to Virak Buntham bus company overturned, causing 11 people to get injured on a road outside of Sen Monorum city in Mondulkiri province.
The police reported that the driver of the bus, plate no PP. 3E-6700, was driving too fast and missed a bend on a winding road near Sen Monorum. The bus left the road, crashed down an embankment, and overturned. The 42-year-old bus driver, Sok Chamroeun, crawled out of the wreck and ran away from the accident scene, leaving the bus and the victims to their fate. There were 11 crash victims, eight men and three women, who were all sent to the Mondulkiri provincial hospital by ambulance.
The Virak Buntham bus was confiscated by the local authorities for examination, and the bus company owner was informed.

Yet another VB crash
Still some people are happy to save $1-2's by using them instead of reputable bus companies

In that case you'd save 3,50 USD, but taxi's don't do that route, they go via Kratie.Captain Bonez wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2020 3:45 pmTaxi?Kammekor wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2020 3:44 pmCan you name any other bus company doing Ban Lung - Mondulkiri - Phnom Penh?jaynewcastle wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2020 3:15 pm Yet another VB crash

The problem is, there's not many buses doing the Phnom Penh - Ratanakiri route. There's taxi's, where they'll cramp 12 people in an 8 seater, there's the death trap mini-vans and there are Vireak Buntham and Heeng Sambath night buses. The Heeng Sambath buses are death traps, the Vireak buses have a relatively safe design but end up side down too often on the Ratanakiri-Monulkiri-Phnom Penh track. This is the second.
So stating people are stupid to take this bus to save a dollar is bit silly, it's not as if buses are leaving for Phnom Penh every 15 minutes from the local bus station.

I reckon you pay a dude enough he'll go wherever you tell him.Kammekor wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2020 3:53 pmIn that case you'd save 3,50 USD, but taxi's don't do that route, they go via Kratie.Captain Bonez wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2020 3:45 pmTaxi?Kammekor wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2020 3:44 pmCan you name any other bus company doing Ban Lung - Mondulkiri - Phnom Penh?jaynewcastle wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2020 3:15 pm Yet another VB crash

As for people saying that taxis are dangerous, have you ever just told the driver to stop driving like a cunt? It's wicked easy to do. Helps if you don't pay the driver first like some mugs do.
Arrive at your destination in 1 piece with all your belongings, then the dude gets paid.

Of course, if you can afford to rent the whole taxi you're playing in a different league. But in that case the price difference isn't 1-2 bucks.Captain Bonez wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2020 4:06 pmI reckon you pay a dude enough he'll go wherever you tell him.Kammekor wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2020 3:53 pmIn that case you'd save 3,50 USD, but taxi's don't do that route, they go via Kratie.Captain Bonez wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2020 3:45 pmTaxi?Kammekor wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2020 3:44 pmCan you name any other bus company doing Ban Lung - Mondulkiri - Phnom Penh?jaynewcastle wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2020 3:15 pm Yet another VB crash

Having said that, I generally feel saver in a big bus than in a taxi / minivan. Basically anything on the road can seriously damage a taxi / van, different story with a bus.

Re: Virak Buntham Bus Overturns, Driver Runs, Eleven Injured
I've used some companies doing VIP minivan runs between PP and Banlung via Kratie that were ok. They may not be running at the moment though. I've never used VB on that route.
This bus was driving in the dark, around 4am I think, so the driver might have gone to sleep at the wheel, or the brakes/headlights weren't working properly, or he was texting on his phone, or an animal crossed the road ... a thousand things can go wrong.
It's just not safe to travel on the roads at night here, especially in clacked-out antiquated vehicles with little or no servicing, and inexperienced drivers without a license who drink redbull or worse to stay awake.
Travel by day is adventurous, travel by night is throwing caution to the winds.
