BANGKOK — Netizens were joined by the Italian ambassador to Thailand on Friday in their condemnation of the Nation TV channel for using photos of the Croatian earthquake to report on the coronavirus outbreak in Italy.
Facebook pages run by Thais in Italy called out the channel’s “Nation With the News” show for airing photos of people lined up in the streets and saying they were patients who couldn’t find hospital beds in Italy earlier this week. In fact, the images were of hospital evacuation in Croatia following an earthquake there on Sunday.
“These are photos of Italy right now. They don’t have enough hospitals. People are lining up in negative pressure chambers” anchor Anchalee Paireerak said on the air. “People are lining up in the streets. …There is not enough space to bury people, so coffins have to be sent outside the city on military vehicles. Retired doctors must be called to duty.”
The Nation has not issued an apology as of publication time.

Just went down to Kamala beach, people in the water, siting, walking>
stopped in the police station and asked , he told me its closed, but they will not be enforcing it except after 8pm
I feel why close it anyway? Easy to stay 2, 3, 4 meters away's from anyone, the virus wont transmit in the water.
There are no sunbeds, chairs, vendors, umbrellas on the beach.. All restaurants along Kamala beach are closed ,some offer take away thou..
The island is on a 8pm-3 am curfew.
6 new cases in phuket ( 5 from Patong 22-42 years old) ..total now stands at 53...

Thailand puts Phuket on lockdown to contain coronavirus
BANGKOK (BLOOMBERG) - Phuket in Thailand is on lockdown starting Monday (March 30), with most transportation to the island banned, in the latest effort to contain the spread of novel coronavirus in the popular tourist destination.
The order will last for at least for one month, according to Phuket Governor Pakkapong Taweepat. Boats, cars and trucks providing essential goods and services are exempted.
Restricting access to the island is a toughening of the state-of-emergency rules imposed by the government last week under which non-essential businesses are shut and inter-provincial travel is discouraged.
Phuket’s economy is reeling from the outbreak. About 56 per cent of total employment was in tourism-related industries, the Bank of Thailand said in a note. Thailand’s foreign tourism receipts plunged in February to the lowest since 2015 and the nation’s economy is on course for its worst contraction this year since the Asian financial crisis in the 1990s.
Finding flights to Phuket and other destinations is in any case getting more and more difficult as the airline industry shuts down.

^^^ What Thai immigration is doing is ludicrous by forcing thousands of foreigners a day into close quarters just so Immigration can reap the cash windfall. Just appalling! I have two oldish friends who won't go for fear of catching the virus. They'd rather pay the overstay fine.

The Department of Land Transport (DLT) announced that Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Phuket are four southern provinces that have closed after witnessing an increasing number of Covid-19 patients.
Director-general Jirut Wisanjit said the closures have begun today (March 30) to prevent the coronavirus from spreading.
All modes of public transport are now cancelled and passengers must contact the agencies to get a refund.

once the virus is over an the xxx thousands will have died, life will go on.

Phuket hotels look to close during lockdown

Mr Kongsak said there are no tourists in the province at this point.
Over 30,000 hotels are set to lose all revenue in April as the lockdown intensifies in provincial areas, while hoteliers in Phuket are bracing for the greatest losses, said the Bangkok Post report.
Of the 32,564 hotels registered in Thailand, some 95% or 30,936 expect to have zero income in April when they temporarily stop operations, according to the THA.
Surapong Techaruvichit, an adviser to THA, said the number of hotel closures is growing every day as more provinces have imposed stricter lockdown policies. Phuket is the latest major tourism destination prohibiting people from free travel in and out of the area.
