Is the Coronavirus Fueling Anti-Chinese Sentiment ?

^Come on, man. The fact that they have CNN listed as neutral and "fair opinion" is enough to know that that chart is a joke. CNN, FOXNEWS, MSNBC, and the like are all full of crap.

dangerous (very)

imo
China Communist Party has go be taken responsible and account to this
"War - so be it" is not generally a sentiment spoken by anyone who has actually seen it in real life.
-------------------

In this case, unfortunately, I've seen too much of it.

Which is why I didn't advocate for war with China. But if it is necessary then so be it.

China declared war on the world with their actions - not words - actions.

When the virus appeared they used censorship, secrecy, and physical arresting of doctors to keep the public in the dark. In January, local officials stopped internally reporting new cases ahead of the communist party enclave in Hubei. China refused to admit multiple countries infectious disease experts to evaluate the severity of the virus. Chinese health officials understood the severity of the threat before the Lunar New Year - they released no information to the public nor to the world. Millions upon millions travelled - so did the virus.

On December 26th, a Chinese lab reported to health officials that a new corona virus with 87% similarity to SARS was present in samples coming from hospitals in Wuhan from patients with pneumonia like symptoms. December 26th they knew.

Not until it was impossible to suppress the extent of the problem did China admit the virus could be transmitted between humans and begin to call for action. It took further weeks before they released the data that Epidemiologists could use to study the impact the virus might have. This all has cost (and will cost) 10's of thousands of lives, trillions of dollars, and destroyed the livelihood of 10's of millions.

All to protect the Communist Party of China. The world be damned.

The spread of this virus is an attack on all of the world. It IS an act of war.

So yes, I fully support the total isolation of China from the world. And I say that knowing one of the ramifications could be war.

Good Luck

This news item from Australia shocks me to the core. It's not xenophobia, but there is an element of racism in these attacks: In Australia, medical workers, particularly (Asian) nurses, are being targeted by random people because they are believed to be coronavirus carriers. These workers are risking their lives to do their jobs, and they get coughed on, spat at and aggressed by random dickheads. Frankly, I think the people who threaten or harrass health workers right now need to taste some tough 'quarantine' time. This is not ok. :whip:

Abused nurse tells public: 'It is wrong. This has got to stop'
By Julie Power
April 7, 2020 — 11.46am

Nurse Shirley Kavanagh's life changed a week ago when two teenage boys started coughing at her on an empty train to work from Macquarie Park. "She's a nurse. She's got COVID-19," they taunted as they coughed.

She threatened to call the police and their parents but they kept coughing. Then they said, "We've got COVID-19."

Shirley Kavanagh was abused on the train while heading to her nursing night shift at Royal North Shore Hospital.

Across NSW, hospitals have told health workers not to wear their uniforms to work after reports doctors, nurses and other health workers have been physically and verbally abused while travelling to and from work. Health unions have been assured that NSW Police will prosecute people who physically and verbally attack health workers.

By the time Ms Kavanagh arrived for her night shift working with premature babies in Royal North Shore Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, she was shaken.

"I felt vulnerable. I couldn't get myself together. I realised this is the new normal. I don't feel safe."
She no longer felt safe travelling to work at a job she had always loved.

None of the medical staff who have been attacked have gone public but Ms Kavanagh and another neonatal nurse from RNSH decided to speak out because of the number of hospital staff who are putting their lives on the line.

"They are the ones who are putting the tubes down people's throats, they are putting themselves and their families at risk, and they go home and put their own kids to bed," Ms Kavanagh said.

"It is wrong," she said of these attacks. "This has got to stop."

She thinks the boys, who she believed to be about 15-years-of-age, only identified her as a nurse because she was wearing her blue scrubs beneath a zip-up sports shirt.

Across NSW, other nurses have been reportedly spat at and criticised online and in public.

A nurse was refused service at a cafe while another in northern NSW was denied accommodation because the landlord was afraid she would spread the virus, according to Brett Holmes, the NSW Nurses and Midwives' Association's general secretary.

The union has received about 10 to 15 "shocking" reports from across the state.

Mr Holmes said these attacks were based on "over-the-top-fear response", misinformation and ignorance of how the virus was spread. They often presumed that every healthcare worker was working in a high-risk area and carrying the virus on their clothing.

Nurses understood infection control, and were "super conscious of not taking the virus home to their family." And if members of the public were practising social distancing, there was very little risk. "It doesn't have legs, or springs," Mr Holmes said of the virus.

There was also an element of "racism on top of this ill-informed view", Mr Holmes said.

"Nurses who have Asian appearance are copping it worse," he said.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander?

US, African nations express 'extreme concern' over alleged coronavirus-related racism in China

In recent days, Africans in Guangzhou have reported being ejected from their apartments by their landlords, being tested for coronavirus several times without being given results and being shunned and discriminated against in public.

A US Embassy security alert on Saturday said "police ordered bars and restaurants not to serve clients who appear to be of African origin", and local officials launched mandatory testing and self-quarantine for "anyone with 'African contacts".

"African-Americans have also reported that some businesses and hotels refuse to do business with them," it said.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian on Thursday told reporters China's most urgent task was to prevent "overseas imports" of the virus but acknowledged "there might be some misunderstandings in the implementation of measures".

China treats all foreigners equally, he said.

"A Nazi flag attached to two Chinese flags was left to fly above the Victorian town of Kyabram for two days after being tied to a Telstra tower in the centre of town"
"Last month in Tongala, only 16 kilometres from Kyabram, the Chinese owners of the local IGA faced a barrage of abuse from customers entering the store, as panic buying and anxiety ramped up.

Store manager, Jodie Wilson, said rumours about "busloads of Asians" clearing out supermarket shelves were untrue for the Tongala IGA."
""They're a little bit heartbroken because they're very community-minded people, they donate to every organisation in this town and employ all locals to keep the money here."
""It's generally a response by people who are not well-educated, who have not travelled, who don't read a broad range of topics, but only read things that are written or hear things that are said by people in their own group," he said."

One in 5 Canadians think it’s not safe to sit beside an Asian person on the bus, according to recent poll
By Wanyee Li Vancouver Bureau
Mon., April 27, 2020timer3 min. read

VANCOUVER—Just under half of Canadians have reservations about sitting next to a Chinese or Asian person on a bus if the person was not wearing a mask, according to an advocacy group.

One in five Canadians asked in a poll taken in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal don’t think it is safe at all and 24 per cent of respondents said they were uncertain about the idea, according to a poll conducted by the Chinese Canadian National Council for Social Justice.

The group asked Corbett Communications to conduct the poll after several high-profile attacks against people of East Asian descent in Vancouver and Toronto, said Amy Go, president of the organization. The poll was conducted April 24 among 1,130 adults living in Canada’s three largest cities. Its margin of error is plus or minus by three per cent.

Go, a long-time advocate, said the results were disappointing but reflect what many Chinese Canadians have experienced since the pandemic started making headlines in January.

“It’s disheartening and disturbing,” said Go in an interview.

“We knew it was bad, but it’s far worse than we had anticipated.”

When asked whether they believed all Chinese or Asian people carry the COVID-19 virus, four per cent of respondents answered yes and 10 per cent responded that they were uncertain.

“It is just simply mind-boggling to me to have even one person think that,” said Go.
