Bangladeshi Workers are Being Trafficked to Cambodia
Last week, a Bangladeshi man was found dead in his quarters on a Cambodian building site. CEO members were wondering what a Bangladeshi worker was doing on a Cambodian building site, considering that Khmer manual labor is so cheap.
A new report from the Bangladeshi government has revealed that criminal gangs are sending trafficked Bangladeshi workers to Cambodia, exploiting them, and even holding them for ransom.

Over 100 trafficked Bangladeshi workers are in deep distress in Cambodia, according to an investigation report of the government.
Those Bangladeshi workers were trafficked to Cambodia on Sticker/Stamp visas showing them as tourists or visitors by Bangladeshi recruiting agencies and their brokers based in Dhaka, Singapore and Bangkok, said the investigation done by the Ministry of Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment.
New Age accessed the report prepared by the EWOE Ministry on Wenesday.
Some of the trafficking victims returned to Bangladesh after suffering the ordeals and the others were in Cambodia in miserable conditions, said EWOE Ministry officials.
Brokers allegedly collected visit visa stamps from the Cambodian embassies in India, Singapore, Laos, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar and Australia and hired the workers of Bangladesh alluring them with good jobs in Cambodia, they said.
At one stages, the brokers realized ransom money from the victims’ family in Bangladesh by torturing them, the report said.
A three member team led by Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment ministry joint secretary Jahangir Alam visited Cambodia from February 16 to 21 to investigate the matter.
The team found that Bangladeshi national Moin Uddin and Singapore national Khoo opened a construction company called EC Builders in Cambodia and recruited over 100 workers from Bangladesh with Sticker/Stamp visas showing them as tourists, visitors and businessmen.
As owners of the EC Builder failed to provide the workers legal documents, the workers lodged complaints to Cambodian police who shut down the company’s office, said the probe report of the EWOE Ministry.
Victims Pangkaj Biswas, Rabindranath Kundu, Zakir and Mohan informed the EWOE Ministry team that Bangladeshi recruiting agency Port City International Limited owner Abdur Rahman took Tk three to four lakh from each victim and sent them to Cambodia after keeping them waiting for one year.
Hundreds of Bangladeshi nationals in collaboration with Malaysians opened fake joint companies to recruit workers from Bangladesh with false promises, the report said.

Over 80 passports seized
Staff Correspondent | Published: 01:12, Mar 14,2020
A mobile court convicted a human trafficker and fined Tk 3 lakh for trafficking workers to Cambodia and Vietnam.
The accused is Abdur Rahman, linked with travel and recruiting agencies Bright Star Corporation Limited and Port City International Limited, located in the city’s Dainik Bangla area.
The mobile court was conducted on Thursday afternoon by Kazi Abed Hossain, magistrate and deputy secretary of the expatriates welfare and overseas employment ministry.
EWOE ministry’s Joint secretary Md Jahangir Alam also took part in the drive with RAB and Ansar Battalion.
Jahangir Alam told New Age that Port City International Limited, on the 4th floor of Sylhet Bhavan near the Dainik Banla crossing, had been locked by the court.
During the drive, many illegal documents were seized along with 80 passports for illegally sending workers to Vietnam and Cambodia, he said.
Abdul Aziz, owner of the Port City International Limited, was also fined Tk 1 lakh because Abdur Rahman was his recruiting agency partner before December 2019.
Now he has bought the share of Abdur Rahman. After selling the share, Abdur Rahman continued his previous business using Port City International document.
In Cambodia, he opened a company named EC Builders with Khoo, a Singaporean national.
Abdur Rahman, along with some Bangladeshis and Vietnamese, was also involved in human trafficking, according to the officials.
For combating trafficking, the EWOE ministry held an inter-ministerial meeting on March 4, 2020.
According to an investigation report of the government, over 100 trafficked Bangladeshi workers are in deep trouble in Cambodia.

Re: Bangladeshi Workers are Being Trafficked to Cambodia
Several Bangladeshis are working in Sihanoukville at online operations. Reports from a source I know quoted them as saying, "better than working in construction..." Their passports are impounded by the bosses, and they are not permitted to leave the worksite, which is where they live... Not only Thais and Chinese are coming over the borders illegally.
