Student Photo Festival in Phnom Penh, May 2020

Student photo festival captures Kingdom’s social realities

Around 250 photos taken by sophomore students of the Royal University of Phnom Penh’s Department of Media and Communication will be exhibited in the DMC Photo Fest 2020 at the beginning of May, making it the largest photo festival for the student category.

The festival marks its second year of celebration following the success of its predecessor, themed “Behind the Reality”.

The Photo Fest is organised by Batch 18 students, led by leading photography lecturer Phan Phearith, with the aim of highlighting persisting social issues in the Kingdom through the camera’s lens. The exhibit also aims to encourage the students’ photojournalism talents.

Speaking at the launch of this year’s exhibition, Mr Phearith said: “A photograph depicts something beyond a memory. It opens the eyes of the people to the social realities that have otherwise been ignored, and as a result, contributes to society’s development.”

“A photograph plays an important role in storytelling. Unlike prose, a photograph can narrate a story in the shortest possible manner – with just a glance. That’s where a photograph’s strength comes in,” he added.

DMC director Ung Bun Y said to make the Photo Fest more interesting to the viewing public, the organising committee has added more subjects, from only three last year to nine this time around.

Among the topics are Slice of The City, Cambodian Identity, Our Food, Our Identity, Life in Three Eras; I am Social Media; Children’s Rights, Where was The Waste From?, Little Dancer and Escaping the Dark Planet.

The festival will run from May 2 to June 2 at the Royal University of Phnom Penh. It will include weekly workshops for classical dance, commercial photography, and mental health education among others.
