Airline check- one way tickets and visas.
I get the 3rd degree at check in about this with Emirates, too, but only occasionally. It happens more frequently where the staff are not dedicated to a particular airline. It’s largely down to the experience of the counter staff, their intelligence, training and attitude. Someone unfamiliar with a route might get a bit OTT, or confuse requirements specific to some destinations as being applicable to all; I usually persist for a few minutes, and then ask to get a supervisor to assist.*
One way ticket cost
For reasons that still don’t really make sense to me, a one way ticket carries a premium over a return ticket. Sometimes, quite a hefty one.
It may be worth considering buying a return ticket with a very long return date, and paying a change fee later. However, the difference in overall cost may not be great- cost of a few beers. I have done this in the past for other destinations.

They will not let you board in the UK on a one way flight to the USA if you have a visa waiver.

Yes, the US is very special, but this thread is about flying to Cambodia/SEA from the UK. A couple of times, I've had problems to explain about Cambodia's VOA at the airline check-in counter when flying to Cambodia, and that can take a while,sometimes 20-30mns while they call to check, so I make sure to leave plenty of time. One way ticket or return ticket didn't make any difference. Always ended up ok.

He asked me how long I was staying and how passports I owned.
I replied couple weeks and 1 passport. Without waiting for me to finish he said pay the man and go wait for passport back
